Not prepared for emergencies - Our tour on December 26 had nine participants and one tour guide (Carol). While Carol was familiar with the plants and animals at the national park, she was completely unprepared and unprofessional during a medical emergency. While riding downhill a participant flipped over the handlebars and landed face-first on the concrete path, and was unconscious with a very bloody facial wound. (My daughter disentangled the bike from the woman.) Instead of calling 911, Carol called her manager first - telling James there was a severe injury. I overheard James ask Carol if she had called 911, and the answer was no. Without a doubt, 911 should have been the first response. While Carol was talking to her manager, the tour participants immediately took action to provide first aid to the victim. For example, I provided first aid under medical personnel arrived, my daughter disentangled the victim from the bike; my son stopped oncoming traffic, approached park patrons seeking medical support, and instructed all the cars to move to the side to allow for emergency responders to get to the scene; and my other son sought an emergency medical kit and water. Carol had a small emergency kit that had one pair of gloves and two gauze (and other items that provided minimal value to the situation) and tossed it near the victim after my children found a park patron that was a nurse and could provide aid. While Carol seemed concerned about moving the bicycles to the side of the road, the park patron that was a nurse was amazing and took control of the situation before emergency responders arrived - which was at least 30-45 minutes before an ambulance arrived on scene - providing instruction to the tour participants (ex., support the woman’s neck) to support and comfort the victim. I don’t know why, but it seemed to take the park ranger in extremely long time to arrive on scene as well. It was a high stress situation for sure and while accidents do happen, the tour guide (Carol) was completely unprepared and did not participate in providing first aid. I think about what could’ve been done differently and a few things come to mind. First, the tour should have two guides: one guide leading the group and one guide following the group. Bicyclist and vehicle traffic ride on the same road and the park was very busy with vehicle traffic and very hilly. The bicycle group did not ride together and was spaced very far apart, which was not optimal for responding to an emergency. A tour guide at the beginning and end of the group would have certainly helped. Second., the first response in a situation for an unconscious participant that is bloody with a neck or head is certainly to call 911 or the park rangers - not your boss. Getting 911 on the phone would’ve provided those like myself with first aid directions and likely would have reduced the amount of time taken to get the ambulance on scene. Third was unclear if the tour guide (Carol) had any first aid training at all. When the ambulance finally arrived, Carol escorted the remaining participants back to the tour starting point. Tour participants ask Carol to follow the group and ride slowly, and she refused, insisting to lead the group. At the end of the tour, the tour company had the nerve to suggest that we provide a gratuity to Carol saying “if you enjoyed your ride to the guide.” Needless to say with this traumatic experience, we did not enjoy the ride. We wish the victim only the best and for a speedy recovery. An electric bike ride through the national park is a fun experience for people familiar and comfortable riding bikes in traffic, but the tour operators lack of preparedness for an emergency completely ruined our experience.
