Along the way, keep an eye out for the Lesser and Greater Adjutant and other highly endangered birds in the plains of India and Bhutan. Also, look for Little Cormorant, Egrets, Indian Pond Heron, Ashy Drongo, and Red-wattled Lapwing in roadside wetlands, with possible sightings of Small Pratincole, Blue-tailed Bee-eater, Citrine Wagtail, Rusty-rumped Warbler, and Striated Grassbird.

Bumthang - Today, cross one of Bhutan’s highest passes, the Thrumshing La, at 3800m. Thrumshing La is a prime habitat for the Blood Pheasant and is home to other high-altitude species such as the Snow Pigeon, Orange-flanked Bush-Robin, Spotted Nutcracker, Red-billed Chough, Fire-tailed Sunbird, Great Parrotbill, Stripe-throated Yuhina, Grey-crested and Coal Tits, and White-browed Fulvetta. You may be fortunate enough to encounter the vibrant Himalayan Monal, one of the most colorful pheasants. Continue to the Bumthang valley, one of Bhutan’s most picturesque valleys.
Bumthang - Phobjika and Gangtey – Valley of the Black Necked Cranes
Gangtey and Phobjika Valleys - Punakha and Thimphu
Thimphu - The Phobjika valley serves as the winter roosting ground for the endangered Black Necked Cranes, visible in the expansive and beautiful valleys from late October/early November until March. After an early breakfast, drive to Punakha and along the Pho Chu valley, look for the White-bellied Heron, one of the world’s rarest birds with a population of fewer than 200 worldwide. Other birds you might spot include the Common and Crested Kingfisher and the elusive Ibisbill.
Drive on to reach Dochula Pass and focus on the western slopes of Dochu la, with the breathtaking Himalayan Ranges in the background. These pristine mixed forests of hemlock, fir, and rhododendron are home to a remarkable array of target species, including the striking scarlet Satyr Tragopan. Other highlights include the stunning Gold-billed Magpie, the beautiful Golden Bush-Robin, the immaculate Cutia, and the dazzling Fire-tailed Myzornis.
