Island Hopping Bliss: A Day on Malta’s Hornblower Cruise
When the opportunity to explore Malta’s northern islands in a single day presented itself, I couldn’t resist. Join me as I recount my adventure on the Hornblower Cruise, where the allure of the Blue Lagoon and the historic charm of Gozo made for an unforgettable journey.
Setting Sail from St. Paul’s Bay
The sun was just beginning to rise over the horizon as I boarded the Hornblower Cruise at St. Paul’s Bay. The air was filled with the salty tang of the sea, and the promise of adventure hung in the breeze. As a former professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours on the water, but there’s something uniquely thrilling about setting off on a new journey, especially when it involves exploring two islands in a single day.
The boat was bustling with fellow travelers, each eager to experience the beauty of Malta’s northern islands. I quickly realized that the top deck’s sunbathing chairs were already claimed, but that was no bother. The main deck offered a perfect blend of shade and sunshine, ideal for a long day under the Maltese sun. With a cold drink in hand and the gentle sway of the boat beneath me, I felt the familiar pull of the ocean’s call.
Discovering the Blue Lagoon
Our first stop was the famed Blue Lagoon on Comino Island. As we approached, the water transformed into a mesmerizing shade of turquoise, inviting us to dive in and explore. The beach itself was small and crowded, but that didn’t deter me. I left my belongings safely on the boat and plunged into the crystal-clear waters.
Swimming in the Blue Lagoon was like gliding through liquid glass. The water was so clear that I could see the sandy bottom and the occasional fish darting by. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of why I fell in love with the ocean in the first place. After a long, leisurely swim, I returned to the boat, feeling refreshed and ready for the next leg of our journey.
Exploring Gozo’s Treasures
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly our visit to Gozo. We docked at Mgarr Harbour and had the option to explore the island at our own pace. I opted for the organized shuttle to Victoria, the capital city, where the Citadel awaited.
Walking up to the Citadel, I was struck by the sense of history that permeated the air. The ancient walls seemed to whisper stories of the past, and the panoramic views from the top were nothing short of breathtaking. I took my time exploring the Citadel and the charming streets of Victoria, savoring every moment.
Our brief stop at Xlendi Bay was the only downside of the tour. We had just ten minutes to snap a photo from a lookout point, which felt rushed and left me longing for more time to explore the bay’s beauty. Despite this, the day was a resounding success, filled with laughter, stunning sights, and the joy of discovery.
As we sailed back to St. Paul’s Bay, the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. It was the perfect end to a perfect day, and I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the magic of Malta’s islands. Until next time, keep riding the waves and chasing the sun!
