Highlights
  • cueva fun fun - Let’s explore Fun Fun Cave! It used to be a very popular attraction, but it’s now abandoned, and we’re still gonna explore 1.5 km of its 28 known.

We pick you up at you hotel 6am. We take a 2-hour road trip to Hato Mayor, where we have authentic Dominican breakfast in a very local place. We meet our guide there.

Then we drive 45 min, get all the equipment, and start the journey.

It’s a 2-hour hike in hostile terrain till the entrance of the cave. We descend rappelling (18m), and start the exploration of the cave which is around 2 more hours going through different cave rooms, observing interesting rock formations, and enjoying what nature has to offer underground. There’s a river inside the cave that we’ll walk through it and submerge for a second at one point. Once out of the cave, we cool down in a water whole. Then we walk back to the car.

At the car, we change clothes (there’s no dressing room, no shower), and drive back to lunch. Then get back around 6pm.

Unique experience with expert team! - This was a unique and unforgettable experience! I participated as a solo female traveler on this excursion and felt very safe and cared for. Ronnie and Joel have years of experience which helped put me at ease, allowing me to fully immerse myself in this trip. After breakfast and the car ride, the experience started out with a 2-hour technical hike with bushwhacking using a machete (Joel led the way; no machete skills needed!). It would be impossible to do this trip without having an experienced guide. This was a HOT hike - so remember to pack your water! I would recommend about 3L for the day. You eventually make your way to the cave entrance where you belay yourself to the floor of the cave (approx. 40 ft). Ronnie and Joel taught me to belay for the first time and it's actually a lot easier than it looks! It was amazing to walk/swim/climb through the cave while learning about it's history. You will also hear and see bats. Ronnie is bilingual (Spanish & English) so if you're hesitant navigating this trip with just English, you will have no troubles communicating. I am an avid traveler/explorer and this is unlike anything I have ever experienced in the past. It is about a 12-hour excursion with transportation from/to Santo Domingo. This used to be a popular tour prior to COVID and completely closed during the pandemic. It's regaining its popularity again and would recommend doing it sooner rather than later if you like to stay away from the crowds. If you're looking for a unique experience, and have the time, I highly recommend!
