Above the Clouds: A Night of Wonders in Tenerife
Drawn by the promise of a sunset above the clouds and a night under the stars, I embarked on the Teide by Night experience in Tenerife. What unfolded was a journey that transcended my expectations, offering a glimpse into the raw beauty of nature beyond the polar regions.
Into the Clouds
As someone who has spent years navigating the icy expanses of the Arctic, I am no stranger to the raw beauty of nature. Yet, the allure of the Teide by Night experience in Tenerife was something I couldn’t resist. The thought of breaking through the clouds to witness the sunset and stars from the heights of Teide National Park was a siren call I had to answer.
The journey began with a sense of skepticism. I half-expected a rickety coach filled with retirees, but I was pleasantly surprised. The coach was modern, equipped with seatbelts, and our guides, Fernando and Oswaldo, were a dynamic duo. As we wound our way through the bustling streets of Las Americas, Fernando assured us that the clouds would soon be beneath us. True to his word, we ascended through the pine forests, emerging into a landscape that was nothing short of spectacular.
The volcanic terrain of Teide National Park, with its Martian-like rock formations, was a stark contrast to the icy landscapes I am accustomed to. Each stop offered a new perspective of Mount Teide, and Fernando’s constant stream of facts about volcanoes and the Canary Islands enriched the experience. It was a reminder of the Earth’s diverse beauty, a beauty that transcends the polar regions I know so well.
A Feast Above the World
Our ascent culminated at the highest restaurant in Spain, a tourist trap perhaps, but one that offered a meal that was surprisingly delightful. As someone who has dined in some of the most remote and harsh environments, the warmth and flavor of the food were a welcome change. With drinks included, it was a moment to savor, a pause before the next act of nature’s grand performance.
With a glass of Cava in hand, we watched the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of pink, red, and purple. The peak of La Palma emerged through the clouds, a sentinel in the sea of mist. It was a view that rivaled the most breathtaking sunsets I’ve witnessed in the Arctic, where the sun lingers on the horizon, casting long shadows over the ice.
Returning to the restaurant for a hot chocolate, I was reminded of the simple pleasures that can be found even in the most unexpected places. It was a moment of warmth and comfort, a brief respite before we ventured into the night.
A Celestial Symphony
The final act of the evening was a stargazing experience that exceeded all expectations. I anticipated a brief glance at the stars, but Fernando’s laser-guided tour of the night sky was a revelation. For thirty minutes, he unraveled the mysteries of the constellations, transforming the sky into a tapestry of stories and legends.
As someone who has spent countless nights under the Arctic sky, the clarity and brilliance of the stars above Tenerife were awe-inspiring. The position of the island allows for a view of all the constellations of the northern hemisphere, a celestial symphony that played out above us.
This experience was a reminder of the wonders that exist beyond the polar regions, a testament to the beauty and diversity of our planet. It was an evening that I cannot recommend highly enough, a journey that transcended my expectations and left me with a renewed sense of wonder.
