A Journey to the Stars

As a former professional surfer, I’ve always been drawn to the ocean’s vastness and the mysteries it holds. But this time, I decided to trade the waves for the stars and embark on a celestial adventure in Puerto de la Cruz. The Teide by Night experience promised a unique blend of sunset views, stargazing, and a telescope experience, all set against the backdrop of Tenerife’s stunning landscapes.

The journey began with a comfortable bus ride from our hotel, expertly navigated by a driver who seemed to know every twist and turn of the mountain roads. Our guide was a fountain of knowledge, sharing fascinating tidbits about the island’s history and geology, peppered with humor that kept us all entertained. As we ascended, the air grew cooler, and the pine-scented breeze was a refreshing change from the salty sea air I’m accustomed to.

Our first stop was a scenic viewpoint, where we were treated to a breathtaking sunset. Although the original spot was clouded over, our guide quickly adapted, leading us to an alternative location that offered equally stunning views. Watching the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of pink, red, and purple, was a moment of pure magic. It reminded me of the sunsets I’ve witnessed from my surfboard, but this time, I was grounded, surrounded by fellow adventurers.

As the temperature dropped, we were offered hot mint tea and cozy blankets, a thoughtful touch that made the chilly evening more bearable. The camaraderie among the group was palpable, as we shared stories and laughter, united by the beauty of the moment.

Stargazing and Culinary Delights

With the sun gone, the night sky took center stage. Our guide used a laser pointer to highlight constellations, weaving tales of mythology and science that captivated our imaginations. The telescope experience was a revelation, offering a glimpse into the universe’s vastness that left me in awe. The clear skies and lack of light pollution made for perfect stargazing conditions, a rare treat that I savored.

The evening culminated with a delightful dinner at the highest restaurant in the National Park. The meal was a celebration of local flavors, with options to suit every palate. The pumpkin soup warmed us from the inside out, while the roasted chicken and chocolate mousse were a satisfying end to a day filled with wonder. The restaurant staff, despite the challenge of serving a large group, were welcoming and efficient, adding to the overall experience.

Reflecting on the Teide by Night adventure, I realized that while the ocean will always be my first love, there’s a whole world above us waiting to be explored. This journey to the stars was a reminder of the beauty and mystery that exists beyond the waves, and I can’t wait to share more of these experiences with you, my fellow wanderers.
