A New Adventure Beneath the Waves

As a seasoned surfer, I’ve spent countless hours riding the waves and feeling the ocean’s power beneath my board. But this time, I decided to explore the world beneath the surface with a Discover Scuba Diving experience in Playa Flamingo, Guanacaste Province. My wife and I, always eager for a new adventure, were thrilled to dive into this half-day underwater exploration.

We were picked up from our hotel by Fataniza, a Colombian pop star turned dive enthusiast, and her colleague Ray. Their energy was infectious, and they made the short drive to the dive shop a breeze. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Phil, the owner and our instructor for the day. His calm demeanor and thorough explanation of the skills we would practice in the pool put us at ease. As someone who thrives on the ocean’s unpredictability, I was excited to learn the art of breathing underwater and clearing a scuba mask.

The Pool Session: Building Confidence

The pool session was an essential part of the experience, especially for my wife, who was a bit apprehensive about diving. Phil’s professionalism and patience shone through as he guided us through the four key skills we needed to master before heading out to the open water. His reassuring presence was a comfort, especially when my wife felt anxious during one of the exercises.

Watching her overcome her initial fears reminded me of the first time I caught a wave. It’s that blend of excitement and trepidation that makes these experiences so rewarding. Phil’s expertise was evident as he calmly addressed her concerns, ensuring she felt safe and supported throughout the process.

Diving into the Deep Blue

With the pool session behind us, it was time to embark on our first open water dive at Las Catalinas. My wife decided to sit out the first dive, but Phil and I were ready to explore the underwater world. The sensation of descending into the deep blue was unlike anything I’d experienced before. It was a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of life above the surface.

During our two dives, we encountered a mesmerizing array of marine life. From schools of vibrant fish to the graceful glide of a southern ray, each moment was a testament to the ocean’s beauty. The highlight of the dive was spotting two white tip sharks, their sleek forms cutting through the water with ease. It was a humbling reminder of the ocean’s vastness and the incredible creatures that call it home.

As we returned to the Flamingo Marina, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the ocean in a new way. The Discover Scuba Diving adventure was a perfect complement to my love for surfing, offering a fresh perspective on the world I hold dear.
