Crossing Borders and Chasing Sunrises

The day began before the sun had even considered rising, with a 4:00 am start from Pinilla. As a seasoned traveler, early mornings are no stranger to me, but there’s something uniquely exhilarating about setting off on a new adventure while the world is still asleep. The journey to Nicaragua was smooth, with the border crossing made easy by our guide, who handled all the paperwork and logistics. It was a relief to have someone knowledgeable leading the way, allowing me to focus on the anticipation of the day ahead.

Our first stop was the Mirador de Catarina, a viewpoint that offered a breathtaking panorama of a dormant volcano crater, the colonial town of Granada, and the vast expanse of Lake Nicaragua. Standing there, with the cool morning breeze on my face, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe at the natural beauty that lay before me. It was a moment of peace and reflection, a reminder of why I love this nomadic lifestyle.

Granada’s Colonial Charm

Granada was our next destination, a city that seemed to have stepped out of a history book. The horse-drawn carriage tour was a delightful way to explore the cobblestone streets and colorful colonial architecture. We stopped at the Bate Bate chocolate shop, where the rich aroma of cocoa filled the air, and indulged in some sweet treats that were impossible to resist.

Lunch in Granada was a culinary delight, with a choice of traditional dishes that showcased the flavors of Nicaragua. As I savored each bite, I couldn’t help but think of the waves waiting for me back in Costa Rica. But for now, I was content to soak in the vibrant culture and history of this beautiful city.

Lake Nicaragua’s Hidden Gems

The boat ride on Lake Nicaragua was a highlight of the day, offering a glimpse into the lives of those who call the islets home. The sight of monkeys playfully swinging from the trees on Monkey Island was a joy to behold, a reminder of the simple pleasures in life. Our final stop was the Masaya Crafts Market, where the vibrant colors and bustling energy were infectious. It was the perfect place to pick up a few souvenirs, each one a tangible reminder of a day well spent. As we made our way back to Costa Rica, I reflected on the day’s adventures, grateful for the opportunity to explore a new corner of the world and eager for the next wave to chase.
