Setting Sail from Port Denarau

The sun was just beginning to rise over the horizon as I made my way to Port Denarau, the starting point for what promised to be an unforgettable day exploring the Mamanuca Islands. As a former professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours in the ocean, but there’s always something magical about setting sail to discover new waters. The Fijian Day Cruise, operated by the warm and welcoming Crusin Fiji crew, was the perfect opportunity to dive into the heart of Fiji’s stunning island landscape.

Our adventure began with a slight delay in pick-up, but the crew’s prompt communication ensured that everyone was on board and ready to go. The anticipation was palpable as we departed, the gentle sway of the boat setting the tone for a day of relaxation and exploration. Our first destination was the Mana Sand Bar, a pristine stretch of white sand surrounded by the clearest turquoise waters I’ve ever seen. As we approached, the crew prepared us for a guided snorkeling session, and I couldn’t wait to dive in.

Snorkeling and Island Hopping

The Mana Sand Bar was a snorkeler’s paradise. The vibrant coral reefs teemed with colorful fish, and the water was so clear that it felt like swimming in a giant aquarium. Despite my years of surfing, snorkeling always offers a different kind of thrill, and the crew’s expertise made the experience even more enjoyable. One of the crew members, John, was particularly attentive, assisting those who needed a little extra help getting to the island.

After our snorkeling adventure, we were treated to a delightful morning tea on board. The spread included freshly baked banana bread, cookies, and a selection of cold beverages. As we sailed towards our next stop, Monu Island, I took a moment to soak in the breathtaking views of the island landscape. The deep aquamarine waters and lush volcanic rock formations were a sight to behold, and I couldn’t resist joining in the splash competition, jumping off the boat with fellow adventurers.

A Taste of Fijian Culture

Our final stop was Monuriki Island, famously known as the filming location for “Cast Away” and “US Survivor.” But beyond its Hollywood fame, Monuriki holds a special place in the hearts of the local Fijian crew, as it’s part of their ancestral land. We were welcomed ashore with a traditional Fijian Lovo lunch, cooked underground in the traditional style. The meal was a feast of flavors, featuring chicken, smoked eggplant, root vegetables, and the famous miti (coconut) sauce.

After lunch, I took a leisurely stroll along the island’s serene beaches, the soft sand beneath my feet and the gentle ocean breeze in my hair. For those seeking a bit more adventure, a guided tour of the island offered insights into local heritage and village life. As the day came to a close, I reflected on the incredible experiences and the genuine warmth of the Fijian crew.
