A Journey into the Heart of Elephant Pride Sanctuary

Nestled in the lush greenery of Inthanon National Park, the Elephant Pride Sanctuary offers a unique opportunity to connect with Thailand’s revered giants in their natural habitat. As someone who has always been fascinated by the cultural significance of elephants in Asia, I was eager to experience this sanctuary firsthand. Upon arrival, I was warmly greeted by Chanchai and his cousin KoKoloco, the third generation of an elephant breeder family. Their passion for these majestic creatures was evident, and their fluent English allowed for a seamless introduction to the sanctuary’s history and mission.

The sanctuary is a family-owned haven, far removed from the commercialized tours that often exploit these gentle giants. Chanchai’s dedication to preserving the elephants’ natural environment and providing them with a dignified life was truly inspiring. As we walked through the expansive 9600 square meters of jungle, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of respect for the sanctuary’s commitment to maintaining the honor and pride of these incredible animals.

A Day with the Majestic Giants

Our day began with feeding the elephants, a task that highlighted the sheer scale of their daily dietary needs. Each elephant consumes around 150 kilograms of food per day, a testament to their impressive size and strength. As I offered bananas and sugarcane to Dido, Mommy, Nonni, and Dumbo, I was struck by their gentle nature and the bond they shared with their caretakers.

After feeding, we embarked on a walk through the jungle, accompanied by the elephants. This immersive experience allowed us to observe their natural behaviors and personalities up close. The elephants moved with a grace that belied their size, and their interactions with one another were a joy to witness. The walk culminated in a playful mud bath, where we joined the elephants in the river for a refreshing shower. The laughter and camaraderie shared among our small group of four, including two German girls and my sister, made the experience all the more memorable.
