Stormy Weekend Escapes: Indoor Adventures in Chang Khlan
Experience the vibrant culture of Chang Khlan this stormy weekend with indoor adventures and cultural tours. From traditional handicrafts to hidden city gems, discover the heart of Chiang Mai while staying dry and inspired.
Embracing the Craftsmanship of Chang Khlan
As the sun rises over Chang Khlan, the day begins with a gentle warmth, perfect for exploring the rich tapestry of Chiang Mai’s traditional handicraft industry. The Craftsmanship Tour offers a unique opportunity to delve into the heart of Thailand’s artisanal heritage. Available from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM or 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, this tour takes you through the vibrant Sankampaeng district, renowned for its exquisite craftsmanship.
Here, you can witness the meticulous process of silk weaving, a tradition passed down through generations. The tour also includes a visit to the Baan Jang Nak, a museum dedicated to elephant wood carvings, where the intricate artistry of local craftsmen is on full display. As you wander through the district, the chance to purchase high-end silk and cotton fabrics, as well as locally made costumes and jewelry, presents itself. This experience is not just about shopping; it’s a journey into the soul of Chiang Mai’s cultural identity.
“A lot of shopping, less demonstration - Recommended for shopping lovers. I had thought this tour would focus more on the process of making handcrafts but it was 5% demonstration and 95% showroom/shopping. Useful if you’d like to see/buy a lot of different handcraft specialities (gemstones, furniture, silk, cotton, wood, silver, and we didn’t continue to the lacquerware), but not a lot of demonstration apart from the silk centre, where we saw the silk process from silkworm to weaving. Some of the places seemed deserted (possibly haven’t started the demos again due to covid?) Friendly and helpful guide, and comfortable van.” - Reviewed at 2022-12-17
Discovering Hidden Gems
As the afternoon heat intensifies, it’s time to retreat indoors and explore the hidden gems of Chiang Mai with a private tour. The Hidden Gems Tour is available from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM or 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, offering a personalized journey through the city’s most cherished landmarks and secret spots.
Guided by a knowledgeable local, you’ll uncover the stories behind Wat Phan Tao and Wat Phra Singh, two of Chiang Mai’s most beautiful temples. The tour also includes a visit to the historic Tha Phae Gate, where the city’s rich history comes to life. With the flexibility to include stops at the Chiang Mai National Museum or the Lanna Architecture Center, this tour is a deep dive into the cultural heart of the city.
“Great tour with purichat! - Purichat, or as May as she told us to call her, was a very knowledgeable and friendly guide. We enjoyed her tour and as well as her very witty sense of humour. Highly recommended :)” - Reviewed at 2025-02-05
A Stormy Weekend of Cultural Immersion

Consider spending your afternoon at the Sa Paper & Umbrella Handicraft Center, where you can learn about the traditional art of Saa-paper umbrella making. This hands-on experience is a delightful way to connect with Chiang Mai’s artistic heritage, even as the rain patters gently outside.
Whether you’re exploring the craftsmanship of Sankampaeng or uncovering the hidden gems of the city, Chang Khlan offers a wealth of cultural experiences that are both enriching and inspiring. Embrace the stormy weather as an opportunity to delve deeper into the traditions and stories that make this region so unique.
