Embracing the Artistry of Chiang Khlan
As the rain gently taps on the windows of your cozy retreat in Chiang Khlan, the allure of the region’s rich cultural tapestry beckons. This weekend, the weather may be wet, but the spirit of exploration remains undampened. Begin your journey with the Craftsmanship Tour, available from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM or 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM on both days. This tour offers a deep dive into the heart of Chiang Mai’s traditional handicraft industry.
In the Sankampaeng district, the air is filled with the hum of creativity as skilled artisans demonstrate their craft. From the intricate weaving of silk to the delicate art of Saa-paper umbrella making, each workshop is a testament to the region’s dedication to preserving its cultural heritage. As you wander through the exhibits of locally made costumes and jewelry, the opportunity to purchase high-end silk and cotton fabrics presents itself, allowing you to take a piece of Chiang Mai’s artistry home.
“A lot of shopping, less demonstration - Recommended for shopping lovers. I had thought this tour would focus more on the process of making handcrafts but it was 5% demonstration and 95% showroom/shopping. Useful if you’d like to see/buy a lot of different handcraft specialities (gemstones, furniture, silk, cotton, wood, silver, and we didn’t continue to the lacquerware), but not a lot of demonstration apart from the silk centre, where we saw the silk process from silkworm to weaving. Some of the places seemed deserted (possibly haven’t started the demos again due to covid?) Friendly and helpful guide, and comfortable van.” - Reviewed at 2022-12-17
A Sanctuary of Wellness and Tradition
As the rain continues to fall, the Hot Springs & Handicrafts Tour offers a sanctuary of wellness and tradition. Available from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM or 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, this tour is a perfect blend of relaxation and cultural exploration. Begin your day with a soothing soak at the San Kamphaeng Hot Springs, where the mineral-rich waters promise rejuvenation and healing.
The hot springs, with their high sulfur content, are believed to possess therapeutic properties, making them a popular retreat for those seeking natural healing. As you immerse your feet in the warm waters, the gentle steam rising around you creates a serene atmosphere, perfect for reflection and mindfulness.
After your rejuvenating experience, explore the vibrant handicraft scene of San Kamphaeng. From the colorful paper umbrellas of Bo Sang to the intricately carved teak wood and silver jewelry, each piece is a reflection of the artisans’ creativity and skill. These handcrafted treasures serve as perfect mementos of your journey, capturing the essence of Chiang Mai’s rich cultural heritage.
