A Journey into the Heart of Palenque

As I embarked on my journey to the San Basilio de Palenque, I was filled with anticipation and excitement. This was not just another travel destination; it was a place steeped in history and culture, a living testament to the resilience and spirit of the African diaspora. The moment I arrived, I was greeted by the vibrant colors and sounds that define this unique community. The air was filled with the rhythmic beats of drums and the laughter of children playing in the streets. It was as if I had stepped into a different world, one where time seemed to stand still.

Our guide, Erick, was a native of Palenque and a practicing lawyer who had returned to his roots to share the story of his community with the world. His passion for his heritage was evident in every word he spoke, and his knowledge of the history and culture of Palenque was truly impressive. As we walked through the village, Erick introduced us to the local language, a fascinating blend of Spanish and African dialects, and taught us traditional greetings that made us feel instantly connected to the people we met.

The highlight of our visit was undoubtedly the Escuela Batata de Palenque, where we were treated to a mesmerizing performance that brought the history of Palenque to life through music and dance. The energy and passion of the performers were infectious, and I found myself completely captivated by the rhythm and movement. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving cultural traditions and the role they play in shaping our identity.

The women of Palenque, dressed in their colorful dresses, are a symbol of Pan-African pride and resilience. The Kombilesa Mi music house was another highlight of our tour.
