Into the Heart of the Sahara

The call of the desert is one that I have always found impossible to resist. The vast, open spaces, the endless dunes, and the promise of adventure have always drawn me in. So when I heard about the 4 Day Private Desert Trek from M’Hamid to Chegaga, I knew it was an experience I couldn’t pass up. Arriving in Zagora, I was greeted by the warm, dry air and the promise of an unforgettable journey.

Our adventure began at the bivouac, a remote and magical place that felt like a world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Here, I met Atman, our guide for the trek. A quiet but kind soul, Atman was responsible for the camels that would accompany us on our journey. His care and respect for these magnificent creatures were evident, and it was clear that we were in good hands.

The Magic of the Dunes

Each day of the trek brought new challenges and new wonders. We walked for hours, covering around 20 kilometers a day, with a good lunch break to rest and refuel. The physical effort was demanding, but it was a challenge I relished. As someone who has always sought out adrenaline-pumping experiences, the trek was a perfect blend of adventure and introspection.

On the third day, we arrived at the large dunes of Chegaga, a sight that took my breath away. The towering dunes, bathed in the golden light of the setting sun, were a sight to behold. Climbing to the top of the dunes, I felt a sense of accomplishment and awe. The view from the top was nothing short of spectacular, a panorama of endless sand stretching out as far as the eye could see.

That night, we camped under the stars, the silence of the desert enveloping us. It was a moment of pure peace, a chance to reflect on the journey and the beauty of the world around us. The desert has a way of stripping away the noise and distractions of life, leaving only the essentials.

The Journey Back

The next morning, our adventure took a new turn as Moubarak arrived in his 4x4 to take us to Erg Chigaga. The drive was a thrilling experience in itself, offering a new perspective on the landscape we had traversed on foot. The contrast between the speed of the 4x4 and the slow, deliberate pace of the trek was striking, each offering its own unique thrill.

At Erg Chigaga, we were treated to a night of glamping, a luxurious end to our desert adventure. The comfort of the camp was a welcome change, yet it was the simplicity of the desert that lingered in my mind. Moubarak and his team provided exceptional service, ensuring that every aspect of our journey was seamless and unforgettable.

As we made our way back to civilization, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experience. The desert had challenged me, inspired me, and left me with memories that would last a lifetime.
