York’s Windy Weekend: Outdoor Adventures and Haunted Histories Await

Experience York’s windy weekend with a blend of outdoor adventures and cultural exploration. From serene carriage rides through the countryside to thrilling ghost tours in the heart of the city, this weekend promises a unique blend of history, mystery, and family-friendly fun.

Embrace the Wind: A Weekend in York

York, a city steeped in history and charm, offers a unique blend of activities that cater to both the adventurous and the culturally curious. As the weekend approaches, the weather promises a mix of partly cloudy skies and brisk winds, setting the perfect stage for outdoor exploration. With temperatures ranging from a chilly 33.7°F to a more comfortable 53.3°F, it’s essential to dress warmly and embrace the breeze as you embark on a journey through York’s rich tapestry of experiences.

Start your day with a Carriage Ride through the picturesque countryside surrounding York. Available from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, this one-hour tour offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. As you glide through the private grounds of Escrick Park Estate, keep an eye out for deer and buzzards, and enjoy a selection of teas and coffees during a mid-ride stop. The enclosed carriage, complete with fluffy blankets and hot water bottles, ensures a cozy experience despite the brisk winds. One recent review from November 2024 captures the essence of this adventure:

“AMAZING! Book if you haven’t already! Fantastic off-road carriage ride and afternoon tea! - Absolutely wonderful, no faults! I received a call the evening before to confirm everything & to check for any dietary requirements and also to ensure I knew where to go. Found the location with ease and was greeted on time. We were given blankets to keep us warm which was a nice touch. The ride was peaceful and scenic, you could almost convince yourself that roads and cars didn’t exist! We learnt so much about the estate, the history of the area and the wildlife, as well as the touching stories about the rescue horses. Really glad to know the horses now have good lives with you, and that we were lucky enough to meet the lovely Ben, the most gentle of horses. After the carriage ride, we were taken back to the meeting point and into the tea room for our afternoon tea. Everything was set up for us and we could help ourselves to a range of hot drinks (or squash). The selection of food was fantastic and there was plenty of it - so much so that we took our scones away for a treat later on. Thank you so much for making our Nanna’s 80th birthday one to remember.” (Reviewed at: 2024-11-10)

Discover York’s Haunted History

As the sun sets and the winds continue to dance through the streets, York’s haunted past comes alive. The Ghost Tour offers a thrilling exploration of the city’s eerie history, starting at 7:00 PM. This 1.75-mile walking tour takes you through York’s snickelways, historic streets, and haunted sites, weaving tales of tragedy, mystery, and ghostly encounters.

The tour includes a visit to York Minster, where the echoes of ancient monks and a cursed workman linger in the air. As you wander through The Shambles, the overhanging timbered shops conceal the eerie remnants of butchered souls and plague victims. The journey concludes at The Golden Fleece, one of York’s most haunted pubs, where you can learn about its ghostly residents. A review from May 2024 highlights the engaging nature of this tour:

“Harry Potter - Beautiful york city. Guide was really informative. Gave history of York and quiz made experience worthwhile. Recommended” (Reviewed at: 2024-05-29)
