Additional Information

The Jewish community played a significant role in shaping the city of Breslau. They constituted a substantial proportion of Breslau’s populace until 1945. Our historical jaunt commences at the city’s marketplace, where we admire the ancient Jewish department stores fashioned in Art Nouveau style, particularly the splendid Barasch Brothers’ store. Along the way, we encounter ‘Stolpersteine’, cobblestones commemorating victims of the Nazi regime. Shortly, we traverse the locale where the largest Jewish ‘New Synagogue’ once stood, associated previously with the Reform Judaism movement, which deemed religious mandates less stringent. Regrettably, the synagogue faced demolition during the infamous Kristallnacht in 1938. We then step into the Jewish district, heading towards the courtyard of the Synagogue Zum Weißen Storch, the sole surviving synagogue in Breslau. Adjacent to it, we find the small synagogue ensconced on three sides by the edifice housing the offices of the Jewish Community of Breslau since 1901. Our enlightening excursion concludes at a Jewish eatery.
