Embark on a historical trip back to Breslau in 1945, amid the chaos of war. Our tour commences at Wroclaw’s bustling market square. Miraculously, the town hall and market square were spared from wartime destruction. From there, we proceed to the captivating salt market, which hid potent underground anti-aircraft defenses. A short stroll leads us to Liebich’s-Hehehe, the location of a formidable concrete bunker that served as the command center for the Wroclaw fortress. The bunker represented the command hub for the second commandant of the Breslau fortress, Hans von Ahlbert, until March 14, 1945. Close by is the main railway station, beneath which the Germans constructed an intricate network of concrete shelters. The remnants of these shelters still visible today. We then hop on a tram at the station and head towards Neumarkt and Dominsel. Here, the catastrophic damage of the war is evident from historic photographs available at the cathedral’s viewing platform.
