Highlights
  • Victoria Falls - The British Canoe Union has rated Zambezi white water rafting as Grade 5, indicating that it involves “extremely difficult, long and violent rapids, steep gradients, big drops and pressure areas”. It’s a high volume, pool-drop river with minimal exposed rock in both the rapids and the subsequent pools.

The “Low water” period occurs when the Zambezi River’s water level is at its lowest, from July to mid-February. This is the prime time for the most thrilling rafting experiences, with day trips spanning from rapids 1 to 18.
The “high water” period begins with the influx of water from catchment areas in Angola and Zambia, causing the river to rise and flow faster. During this time, day trips are conducted further downstream, covering rapids 11 to 23, typically from February to July. There’s a brief hiatus in the rafting season around April/May, depending on the annual rainfall. The Zambezi River, characterized as a high volume, pool drop river, experiences flooding from mid-February to the end of June. During the peak of the flood, the water volume surging over the Falls can quadruple that of the Colorado River.
