Experience the most intriguing elements of Portuguese history with our Old Goa Heritage Walk. Previously, Old Goa was not only the capital of Goa but also a bustling city, even before the Portuguese era. It was once the heart of the empire of Bahmani Sultan Adil Shah. The Portuguese, led by Afonso de Albuquerque, arrived in 1510 and seized the city from Adil Shah, the Bijapur Kingdom’s leader. Their main intentions for the East were commerce and spreading Christianity.

On our Old Goa Heritage Walk, discover some extremely important historical edifices. Old Goa, a World Heritage site, is home to some of the most majestic and ancient churches in the region. The magnificent Sé Cathedral, St. Francis of Assissi Church, the Chapel of St. Catherine, Church of Our Lady of Rosary and the dome-shaped church of St. Cajetan are among the many you’ll see.

Old Goa - past and present - Vimala was an excellent guide to the fascinating area of Old Goa. She was very knowledgeable and picked out details around each site we visited, which we would have missed without her. She has a genuine interest in history and architecture which made her storytelling so much more vivid and memorable. She also gave a fresh context to the history by making interesting connections with modern day rituals and practices.
