Manikarnika Ghat - Manikarnika Ghat is one of Varanasi’s oldest and most revered ghats. It serves as the primary cremation site, where the bodies of devout Hindus are cremated before their ashes are carried away by the sacred Ganges River. Hindu mythology associates this ghat with Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, and it is believed that those cremated here achieve moksha (salvation). Bodies are brought to Manikarnika Ghat on bamboo stretchers, draped in red cloth, and are consigned to the flames with prayers for eternal peace. The ghat features a sacred well, the Manikarnika Kund, said to have been created by Lord Vishnu at the dawn of time. Lord Vishnu is believed to have meditated here for many years, and his footprints, or charana paduka, are thought to be visible on a circular marble slab. Manikarnika Ghat is also renowned for the temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Mata Durga, constructed in the mid-1800s.

This tour offers an enlightening journey through the city, shedding light on the cycle of life and death. Experience the city from a new perspective, with a glimpse of Mahashamstana, the great cremation ground where the final rites after death are performed. Explore sacred fertility ponds and venture into the semi-darkness of the Ashram of the Aghor, a path of tantric non-dualism, renowned for its black-clothed renunciants who meditate in the cremation grounds. This site draws many visitors annually who come to perform the last rites for their loved ones. It is believed that by doing so, they break the cycle of rebirth, granting Moksha (liberation from rebirth driven by the law of Karma) to their loved ones. Varanasi, the religious capital of India, is also the home of the Aghoris. Join us on a tour to explore how these two contrasting elements coexist within the same city.
