- City Palace of Udaipur - Udaipur, especially its historic section by Lake Pichola, is home to the city’s most iconic landmarks, including the majestic City Palace and Lake Palace. This area retains the essence of a 16th-century Rajput fortress, where the Maharaja is still revered by his loyal subjects. The City Palace majestically overlooks Lake Pichola, with its balconies, cupolas, and towers offering stunning views of the lake and city. This complex comprises four major and several minor palaces, collectively forming the grand City Palace. The main section now serves as a museum showcasing artifacts.
- Jagdish Temple - The largest temple in Udaipur, Jagdish Temple, is a major attraction. While its exterior carvings are beautiful, including some hidden erotic pieces highlighted by guides, the temple itself may seem ordinary if you’ve seen others. Its charm lies in its immense popularity, drawing a steady stream of devotees since its opening in 1652 to worship Lord Jagannath, a form of Vishnu, represented by the black stone idol inside.
- Bagore Ki Haveli Museum - Bagore-ki-Haveli Museum is a restored royal haveli featuring unique design details, now part of a museum and cultural center. It’s best visited in the evenings for the nightly music and dance performances.
- Bharatiya Lok Kala Mandal - Known as Udaipur’s unofficial “Puppet Museum,” the Bharatiya Lok Kala Museum celebrates Rajasthan’s rich tradition of puppetry. Visitors can enjoy frequent puppet shows throughout the day. The museum also displays models, instruments, and photographs that document local traditions and crafts.
- Shilpgram - Located 3km (2 miles) from town, this arts-and-crafts “village” aims to “promote and preserve the traditional architecture, music, and crafts of western India’s tribal villages.” Although it feels somewhat artificial, Shilpgram offers interesting cultural performances, camel rides, and tribal crafts for sale. Visitors can also dress in traditional Rajasthani attire for photos. Be aware that it is very touristy and can become crowded during peak season.
- Saheliyon ki Bari - Created by Sangram Singh in the 18th century for the women of his household, possibly to mimic the monsoon climate for his ailing daughter, this is considered Udaipur’s finest garden. Despite some neglect and non-functioning fountains, it remains a tranquil spot, with a variety of indigenous trees that may interest botanists.
