- Taj Mahal - Constructed by Shah Jahan as a timeless tribute to his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal (“Jewel of the Palace”), the Taj Mahal stands as a testament to his legacy as a distinguished patron of architecture. Its allure is not solely due to its flawless symmetry, ethereal glow, remarkable proportions, or grand scale (which is hard to grasp from its frequently reproduced images), but also the intricate detailing that adorns every inch of marble, earning it the title of a world wonder. From a distance, it appears as a perfectly proportioned white marble masterpiece, but it is actually a vast, jewel-encrusted structure, with pietra dura embellishing both the interior and exterior. This technique, possibly introduced to Agra by Jahangir from Italy, is more likely of Persian origin. The intricately carved floral designs are inlaid with precious stones such as agate, jasper, malachite, turquoise, tiger’s eye, lapis lazuli, coral, carnelian, and various shades of marble, slate, and sandstone. Elegant calligraphy, inlaid with black marble, is skillfully enlarged as it ascends, creating an optical illusion of perfectly balanced typography, with letters appearing uniform from any angle.
The Taj changes hues with the time of day, and it is recommended to experience this by visiting in the morning and evening; however, the ticket allows only one entry. Enjoy a substantial breakfast before visiting (as no food is permitted past security), and either spend the day or arrive early in the morning.
Note: The Taj is closed on Fridays. The Taj ticket also offers a small discount at four other major attractions (Agra Fort, Itmad-ud-Daulah, Sikandra, and Fatehpur Sikri), so keep it handy to show when purchasing entry to these sites.
- Agra Fort - Constructed by Akbar (or rather, by his 4,000 workers) on the west bank of the Yamuna, Agra Fort began taking shape between 1565 and 1573. Each subsequent emperor left his mark, and today the towering red-sandstone walls enclose a variety of palace apartments, showcasing the different architectural styles of Akbar and his grandson Shah Jahan. Akbar’s son, Jahangir, introduced a “chain of justice” (1605) allowing any subject to appeal to him, reflecting the character of a ruler often dismissed as a drunkard. Entry is through the impressive Amar Singh Gate. On the right, you pass Jahangiri Mahal, the palace for the court’s women, dating back to Akbar’s reign (circa 1570). In front lies a stone pool with steps inside and out—legend has it that it was filled with rose petals during Nur Jahan’s era, allowing her to bathe in their fragrance. Historians note that here, unlike Akbar’s buildings which juxtapose Hindu and Islamic elements, a subtle blend of Hindu and Persian elements created a new style, known as the “Mughal style,” characterized by its classical purity.
- Itmad-ud-Daula - Often referred to as a mini-Taj, this is the tomb of Mirza Ghiyath Beg, who served under Akbar and was the father of Nur Jahan, Jahangir’s influential wife. She elevated her father to the position of Lord of the Treasury and commemorated him in this “bejeweled marble box,” demonstrating her strong financial influence. Also constructed from translucent white marble, it was the most innovative building of 17th-century India, marking a shift from the heavy red sandstone favored by earlier Mughal emperors. It likely inspired Shah Jahan with its exquisite symmetry and detailing; the pietra duras are as delicate as embroidery, and the rich gilding and paintwork feature typical Persian motifs, such as the wine-vase and the dish and cup, popular with Jahangir at the time.
