- City Palace of Udaipur - Discover the largest royal complex in Rajasthan, a key tourist attraction in the city. The splendid City Palace was the royal residence for 22 generations of the Udaipur Royal Family over 400 years.
This vast palace complex includes a well-organized and captivating museum, heritage hotels, restaurants, a school, and shopping arcades. The City Palace Museum galleries are filled with invaluable royal memorabilia, featuring one of India’s best-maintained painting collections, textiles from the regal era, royal palanquins with ivory, glass inlay, and mirror work, and an armory gallery showcasing the warlike lifestyle of the Maharajas. Don’t miss the Silver Gallery, one of the world’s largest royal silver collections, highlighted by the silver buggy from Bikaner, gifted to the Udaipur family in 1940. Visiting the Palace Complex is like stepping back in time.
- Jagdish Temple - A short stroll from the City Palace leads to the Jagdish Temple, a stunning example of Hindu iconography. With a spire nearly 79 feet high, it is Udaipur’s largest and most significant temple. Built in 1651 at a cost of 1.5 million rupees (or $22,000), it is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the Hindu god of preservation. Jagdish Temple is one of Udaipur’s architectural marvels. The three-story temple stands on a raised platform, boasting intricately carved pillars, spacious halls, and painted walls adorned with vibrant colors and detailed ceilings. Visitors can witness live chanting and prayers, immersing themselves in its unique spiritual atmosphere.
- Jagmandir - Jagmandir is a stunning palace resembling a floating marble structure in a lake, a must-see when visiting the enchanting Lake Pichola. Constructed by three successive Maharajas of Udaipur in the 16th and 17th centuries, the royal family used the palace as a summer retreat and venue for private gatherings. It is also the location where the famous 1983 James Bond movie, Octopussy, was filmed. The palace continues to host some of the most luxurious destination weddings in the Indian Subcontinent. It features a beautiful flower garden, courtyards, fountains, water pools, and a well-maintained restaurant. Accessible only by a pleasant boat ride, visitors can capture breathtaking views and photos of the City Palace Complex, the Lake Palace Hotel, and the surrounding vintage buildings, rooftop restaurants, and heritage hotels and mansions.
- Vintage Collection of Classic Cars Museum - Welcome to a unique venue showcasing magnificent vintage cars in an art deco building. The collection is housed in the original former Udaipur State Motor Garage, a splendid setting for such a fine array of vehicles. The collection was unveiled to the public on 15 February 2000 by Lord Montagu of Beaulieu, founder of the National Motor Museum in England. The grand old beauties are in perfect running condition! Rolls Royce, Mercedes, Cadillac, MG: all lined up for admiration. The museum houses 22 splendid vehicles, including the beautiful 1934 Rolls-Royce Phantom used in the Bond film Octopussy, and the Cadillac convertible that transported Queen Elizabeth II to the airport in 1961. All of it, still belonging to the Royal House of Udaipur, is likely the only one of its kind in India. An original Burma Shell petrol pump, still operational, adds a quaint touch of nostalgia and authenticity to the car collection.
- Sahelion Ki Bari - Translated as “the garden of the maidens,” Saheliyon ki Bari is located in the northern part of the city and is one of the few historical gardens in India specifically built for royal ladies and their maidens to enjoy time away from palace politics and intrigues, common in that era. Built in the 18th century by Maharana Sangram Singh II, it is one of India’s largest and most beautiful historical gardens. Enclosed with a triple defensive wall to provide privacy to the royal women, it is filled with specially designed and named fountains and kiosks, a lotus pool, and white marble elephants. The place has attracted many content creators, and several Bollywood movies have been filmed here. Among the other attractions are bird fountains, flowerbeds, rain fountains, and shady bougainvillea lawns. It is not only a visual delight but also a relaxing way to end your day.
- Fateh Sagar Lake - Fateh Sagar Lake is located in a stunning area offering three views: hills, water, and flora. Surrounded by the high Aravalli hills on all sides, the lake is considered the pride of Udaipur and a favorite spot for locals. Interested in typical spicy Indian delicacies? Fatehsagar boasts an amazing food street with numerous local restaurants offering mouthwatering dishes. The lake is home to three small islands and a rich variety of flora and fauna. Its 800-meter-long dam is situated on the eastern side of the lake, originally known as Connaught Lake, named after Prince Arthur, 1st Duke of Connaught and Strathearn. The dam remains an important source of drinking water for the people of Udaipur.
