- Hawthorne Vineyards - Tour participants can purchase flights, wine by the glass, bottles, or join the wine club during the tour.
Recognized as one of the finest vineyards in Traverse City, guests can enjoy some of the best red and white wines on the peninsula. Red wine enthusiasts can try the Merlot/Cab Franc blend, while white wine lovers can sample the Auxerrois or Dry Riesling. Guests can also enjoy a popcorn flight and a charcuterie board. This is one of the newest and most promising wineries on Old Mission Peninsula.
Hawthorne Vineyards is perhaps the most secluded tasting room on Old Mission Peninsula. The tasting room is perched on a high bluff, offering views of both East and West Grand Traverse Bays. Visitors will be surrounded by nature—no traffic, no close neighbors—just vineyards, woods, and water.
Guests can enjoy views of both bays from the tasting room. An outdoor patio area provides a relaxing environment with stunning bay views and a cozy outdoor fireplace.
- Bowers Harbor Vineyards - Tour participants can purchase flights, wine by the glass, bottles, or join the wine club during the tour.
Established in 1991, Bowers Harbor Vineyards is one of the original wineries in the area. Once a horse farm, the estate now features 20 acres of vinifera vines. The inviting tasting room, a former horse stable, is staffed by friendly personnel who introduce guests to a wide selection of top wines by the glass, bottle, or flight.
Known as the “dog winery,” guests may encounter various dogs at the vineyard.
Bowers Harbor cultivates Riesling, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Grigio, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The standout is the Pinot Secco (a sparkling Pinot Grigio) and the Pinot Secco Rose (Magic Mike’s favorite).
Guests can order wine flights and relax on the patio, by the fire pit, in the pavilion, or at tables nestled among the vines.
- Chateau Chantal Winery & Tasting Room - Tour participants can purchase flights, wine by the glass, bottles, or join the wine club during the tour.
Chateau Chantal is situated atop one of the highest points on Old Mission Peninsula, offering breathtaking views of both East and West arms of Grand Traverse Bay.
The highlight here is the rare Ice Wine. Guests can sample the Ice Wine that was served at a White House dinner during former President Obama’s administration. Tour participants can customize wine flights, and Chateau Chantal is the only winery on Old Mission Peninsula where guests can purchase a glass of Brandy. Wine enthusiasts can choose from selections like Dry Riesling, exceptional Pinot Blanc, the popular Naughty Red, and Malbec.
Chateau Chantal is one of the original wineries in Traverse City, Michigan, known for its outstanding wine, excellent customer service, and unforgettable views.
- Brys Estate Vineyard & Winery - Tour participants always enjoy Brys Estates, one of Michigan’s Top Ten most popular wineries. Guests will quickly discover that the secret to Brys’ success might be the Froze’—a frozen wine drink perfect for a hot summer day. Guests can choose various toppers, and this drink is the winery’s best seller. Remember… Froze’ with a Red Topper!
Tour participants can purchase the only Sauvignon Blanc on Old Mission Peninsula or try the “porch pounder,” a rare Pinot Noir Riesling blend. Guests can also customize a tasting of various wines and then head to the deck for a fantastic photo opportunity.
The lawn bar is open during the summer months, making it one of the best locations in Traverse City to sample wines. Snack packs are also available for purchase.
Another popular attraction for guests is the lavender soaps and lotions grown by the Brys family, available for purchase.
- Bonobo Winery - Tour participants can purchase flights, wine by the glass, bottles, or join the wine club during the tour.
A place where guests feel like movie stars, with wines they can’t wait to brag about and share. Bonobo Winery was founded by brothers and longtime Traverse City natives, Todd and Carter Oosterhouse. It offers stunning views, excellent wines, and top-notch customer service.
Tour participants can sample expert-level red wines like the BDX and a top-shelf Pinot Noir. White wine lovers can try a bubbly Blanc de Blancs, exceptional Chardonnays, and a Fume Blanc. This is the only winery on Old Mission Peninsula where guests can sample a glass of whiskey. Guests can also enjoy amazing food options, including an expert-level charcuterie board and hummus (food options depend on availability and the menu may change). This winery is one of the most memorable locations on the wine tour—it’s quite an experience.
- Grand Traverse Bay - Grand Traverse Bay is an arm of Lake Michigan, separated from the rest of the lake by the Leelanau Peninsula. The bay stretches approximately 32 miles long, ranges from 7 to 10 miles wide, and reaches depths of up to 620 feet in some areas. It is the second-largest bay of Lake Michigan, after Green Bay.
Grand Traverse Bay was named by 18th-century French voyageurs who made “la grande traverse,” or a long crossing, across the bay’s mouth.
The most notable feature of Grand Traverse Bay is its division into East and West arms by the Old Mission Peninsula.
During the tour, on the way from Traverse City to Hawthorne Vineyards, guests will enjoy stunning views of the East Bay. The drive from Hawthorne to Bowers offers views of the West Bay. Throughout the tour, guests will see views of both East and West Bays. The breathtaking views are a significant highlight of this award-winning tour.
- Old Mission Peninsula Wine Trail - Book and experience what tens of thousands of wine enthusiasts and guests have already fallen in love with—Traverse City Wine Country! The renowned Old Mission Peninsula Wine Trail is perfect for your next Movie Stars Wine Tour! Create lasting memories with friends and family during your next vacation or weekend getaway!
During the award-winning Old Mission Peninsula tour, guests will enjoy views of destinations such as the beautiful East and West Grand Traverse Bays, Bowers Harbor, The Bowers Harbor Inn, The Boathouse Restaurant, Jolly Pumpkin, and Bryant Park, to name a few.
A key feature is the microclimate created by the surrounding bays, making this region ideal for producing a wide range of fruits, vegetables, and, of course, grapes. The East and West bays remain warmer in the fall, extending the growing season. After winter, the bays stay cool in spring, preventing damaging frost and allowing local vineyards to thrive. - Traverse City - The tour collaborates with various wineries on Old Mission Peninsula, visiting four locations on the standard tour. Have a favorite? Let the guide know which wineries are on your wish list. Day tour guests visit four wineries, while sunset/afternoon tour guests visit three wineries and an optional distillery. Winery selection is based on availability, guest preference, weather conditions, and season. The Old Mission Peninsula Tours feature Hawthorne Vineyards, Bowers Harbor Vineyards, Brys Estates, Chateau Chantal, Chateau Grand Traverse, Bonobo Winery, and Old Mission Distillers.
