- Mount Field National Park - The Hobart Adventurer Day Tour begins with a visit to the stunning Mount Field National Park, a Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Visitors can explore the enchanting Pandani Grove Nature Walk around Lake Dobson, as well as the beautiful Russell and Horseshoe Falls.
- Lake Dobson - The tour starts with a visit to the picturesque Lake Dobson in the alpine region of Mount Field National Park, a Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Situated at approximately 1,000 meters above sea level, Lake Dobson provides a magnificent backdrop for the thriving native flora along its shores and is home to a friendly platypus population.
Tour participants have the chance to complete the wonderful Pandani Grove Nature Walk, an easy 1.5km loop around Lake Dobson through native pandani (giant grass trees), impressive alpine gums, and soft tree ferns. It’s a truly stunning part of the world with exceptionally clean air, perfect for relaxing and escaping the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Please note that guests can opt for the tour without Lake Dobson, including the Tall Trees Walk instead. This is also an alternative for bad weather when Lake Dobson is inaccessible.
- Tall Trees Walk - Enter a living cathedral of towering giants. This gentle loop trail meanders through a lush temperate rainforest, where some of the tallest flowering plants on Earth—Eucalyptus regnans, or swamp gums—soar over 80 meters high.
As you walk beneath their towering canopies, you’ll be surrounded by:
- Moss-covered myrtle and sassafras trees, ferns, and fungi thriving in the cool, damp understory.
- The peaceful sounds of rivulets and birdsong, with occasional sightings of green rosellas, pink robins, or even a shy pademelon.
- Interpretive signs that tell the story of these ancient giants and the delicate ecosystem they support.
This walk is easy-grade and family-friendly, making it ideal for all ages and fitness levels. It’s an opportunity to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with nature’s grandeur.
- Russell Falls - After visiting Lake Dobson, the tour returns to the Mount Field Visitor Centre to begin the short 1.4km walk to the breathtaking Russell Falls, Tasmania’s most photographed waterfall. The walk through the lush, mossy cool-temperate rainforest is as magnificent as the falls themselves, with plenty of chances to pause and appreciate the native flora and fauna.
A short climb up a set of stairs next to Russell Falls leads to the enchanting Horseshoe Falls, where the cascading water adds to the fairytale-like atmosphere of the area. Guests have about an hour to complete the circuit, allowing for a leisurely pace to take it all in.
- Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary - The afternoon on the Hobart Adventurer Day Tour includes a visit to the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, where guests can get up close with a variety of native animals, including wombats, echidnas, kangaroos, quolls, and the famous Tasmanian Devil.
A 30-minute guided tour is included in the admission fee to Bonorong, where guests will learn about three native species from one of the knowledgeable and friendly keepers at the sanctuary. Admission fees are $35.50 for adults and $20.50 for children (not included in tour price).
- New Norfolk - From Mount Field National Park, the tour heads back towards Hobart, stopping in the Derwent Valley at the charming historic town of New Norfolk for lunch. Guests can purchase food and drinks at one of the excellent cafes, bakeries, or restaurants, and there is a large supermarket available as well.
- Mount Wellington - The day tour concludes with a trip to the summit of the spectacular kunanyi/Mount Wellington, a must-see destination for visitors to Hobart. Rising 1,271 meters above the city, the views from the summit over Hobart and the Derwent River on a clear day are simply breathtaking, with views towards the wild mountains of the Southwest National Park equally impressive.
There are several dedicated viewing platforms on the summit where guests can take photos, as well as the pinnacle observation shelter, which features a series of interesting information placards. Guests have about an hour to enjoy all the sights of the summit before descending back down the mountain road to Hobart, where they will be dropped off at their CBD accommodation.
