Positioned to the east of Arusha town and about a 20-kilometer drive from the city; Mount Meru stands as Tanzania’s second tallest peak. This imposing mountain reaches an elevation of 4566 meters above sea level, situated within the confines of Arusha National Park.
Mount Meru offers a single path to its summit and while a three-day ascent is possible, a four-day trek is advisable for proper acclimatization. It’s commonly used by mountaineers as preparation for scaling Mount Kilimanjaro due to its useful acclimatization process, boasting minimal snow due to its volcanic activity in the past.
In contrast to Kilimanjaro, climbers ascending Mount Meru are required to be accompanied by an armed ranger or rangers, as the journey cuts through Arusha National Park. During this climb, adventurers can delight in a walking safari where they might spot herds of African buffaloes, Zebras, and Black and white colobus monkeys, among other notable wildlife.
