Arrival at Surabaya’s North Quay

As I stepped off the cruise ship and onto the bustling Surabaya North Quay, I was immediately enveloped by the vibrant energy of the city. The port was alive with the chatter of fellow travelers, all eager to embark on the Surabaya Cultural Tour. Our guide, Sheraly, greeted us with a warm smile, her enthusiasm infectious. I was thrilled to see her again, having previously experienced her insightful guidance on a Probolingo tour.

The tour began with a visit to the Pabean Market, a traditional market that offered a sensory overload of sights, sounds, and smells. The market was a kaleidoscope of colors, with stalls brimming with exotic fruits and local delicacies. I sampled a variety of fruits, some of which were entirely new to me, their flavors a delightful surprise. The market was a window into the daily lives of the locals, a place where tradition and modernity coexisted in harmony.

Exploring Surabaya’s Heritage

Our next stop was the Ampel Mosque, a heritage site that stands as a testament to Surabaya’s rich cultural tapestry. The mosque’s architecture was a blend of Javanese and Arab influences, reflecting the diverse cultural heritage of the region. As I wandered through the mosque’s serene courtyards, I was struck by the sense of peace that enveloped the place. It was a moment of reflection, a chance to appreciate the spiritual depth of the local culture.

Unfortunately, two sections of the tour were unable to be completed due to closures, but this unexpected change allowed us more time to explore the areas we could visit. Sheraly’s knowledge of the city’s history and politics was impressive, and she shared stories that brought Surabaya’s past to life. Her passion for her city was evident, and it was clear that she took great pride in sharing its stories with us.

A Taste of Surabaya

The tour included a delightful local lunch, a feast for the senses that introduced us to the flavors of Surabaya. The dishes were a medley of spices and textures, each bite a new discovery. As we dined, Sheraly explained the cultural significance of each dish, adding another layer of depth to the experience.

With some extra time on our hands due to the closures, we indulged in a bit of shopping. The local shops offered a variety of unique souvenirs, from handcrafted batik to intricate wood carvings. As the tour came to an end, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to immerse myself in Surabaya’s rich cultural landscape.
