Park and National Palace of Pena - Begin the journey from your hotel for an unforgettable day. Sintra, located 30 km from Lisbon, boasts a unique micro-climate that ensures the town remains fresh and supports lush vegetation, creating a mysterious and romantic atmosphere. The Pena National Palace, Quinta da Regaleira, and Monserrate Palace are the standout monuments. Upon arrival in the town, travel to the top of the Serra de Sintra to visit the Palácio da Pena, perched on a rock 500m above sea level, offering views of the coast all the way to Lisbon. It is one of the finest examples of 19th-century architectural Romanticism globally and is Europe’s first romantic palace, predating the famous Schloss Neuschwanstein in Bavaria, Germany by about 30 years.

Quinta da Regaleira - Situated in the heart of Sintra, Quinta da Regaleira is a monument rich in mystery and symbolism. Its owner, Carvalho Monteiro, also known as Monteiro dos Milhões, was intrigued by alchemy, Freemasonry, Rosicrucianism, and the Templars. The estate was transformed into a place filled with mystical symbolism. Quinta da Regaleira was designed as a space for contemplation, meditation, and the celebration of ancient mysteries. Today, it is one of Sintra’s most visited tourist attractions, offering a mysterious journey through secret tunnels, exotic gardens, lakes, caves, and buildings, including the renowned Initiatory Well. This spiral well descends 27 meters into the earth and is encircled by a spiral staircase.

Parque e Palacio de Monserrate - A haven for writers, Monserrate attracted numerous foreign travelers, particularly English, who praised its beauty in travel narratives and prints. When Francis Cook, a wealthy 19th-century English industrialist and art collector, visited, he was captivated. This passion led to the creation of a Romantic masterpiece: the Park and Palace of Monserrate.

Sintra National Palace - The current Sintra Palace comprises several royal palaces. It is a collection of buildings constructed, expanded, and modified over the centuries, with the foundation date of the oldest palace remaining an unsolved mystery. It is likely that the first building was erected around the 10th or 11th century when Sintra was under Islamic rule. By the end of the Middle Ages, the Paço de Sintra was the center of a territory managed by the Queens of Portugal and a favored retreat for Portuguese monarchs. The region’s abundant game, the cool summer climate, and the need for refuge during plagues in the capital made Paço de Sintra a popular destination. As a keeper of memories and witness to significant events in Portuguese history, Paço de Sintra offers visitors a chance to travel back in time and explore lives vastly different from our own.
-
National Palace of Queluz - The Palace of Queluz, adorned with exquisite decorations and valuable pieces, became the official residence of royalty, particularly the Portuguese prince regent, the future D. João VI, and his family, until the royal family’s flight to Brazil due to the French invasions. D. Pedro IV, or D. Pedro I of Brazil, was born in this palace. It also served as a discreet place of confinement for Queen Mary I, “Mary Louca,” as her mental health deteriorated following D. Pedro’s death.
-
Palacio Nacional de Mafra - In the village of Mafra, the monumental Palace of Mafra, erected by D. João V in 1711, is impossible to overlook. Known for its hospitality, the famous Tapada de Mafra, covering 1187 hectares and enclosed by a 21 km wall, is home to a diverse range of animal and plant species. The palace, located in the village center, is the most opulent national convent in the Baroque style and also includes a Basilica and the Royal Library. The Library houses a precious collection of over 40,000 books with gold bindings, including the first edition of Luís de Camões’ Lusíadas. It also features a set of six organs, unique worldwide for their size and beauty.
