Highlights
  • Castelo dos Mouros - We will start our tour with a pick up at Sintra train Station and proceed to visit a ruined medieval village at the gates of the Moorish castle, there, we will see the remains of an archaeological excavation where i worked back in 2012 and is now an open air museum with old structures, graves popping off the ground and a museum with a lot of artifacts we found there.
  • Santuario da Peninha - The seccond place we will visit lies in the middle of the Sintra forest where an old chapel lies on a top of a hill, this chapel is known as an old pilgrimage spot where a miracle happened. Another ruined building is also seen on this barren hill top, this ruined church has its foundations on the foundation of Portugal itself. Our journey will continue to this more place of the hill, away from the crowds and mostly known only by locals. For me one of the best views of all the Lisbon bay area.
  • Penedo de Adrenunes - The last place we will visit will be a curious one. After a 15 minute walk deep down in the Sintra Forest, another hill top facing the westernmost point of continental europe can be visited. The place called Penedo de Adrenunes, gives us the Stonehenge vibes. Despite archaeological artifacts never been found here, it is believed that this place was used by our ancestors 5000 years ago.

Additional Information

I’m Diogo, an archaeologist residing in Sintra from my earliest memories. Over the years, I’ve developed a deep affinity and extensive understanding of my homeland which I’m eager to impart. I’ve participated in archaeological digs in Sintra, discovering relics of ancient civilizations. As a local tourist guide, I’m loaded with tips and suggestions for newcomers wishing to experience the wonder of our region. I designed this tour focusing on non-traditional places in Sintra that are typically unseen by visitors, either because locals primarily know of them or their locations are not easily discovered. This tour, from my perspective, reveals Sintra in its pure, untouched form - away from throngs of tourists and brimming with historical mysteries to unfold.

If you book one tour in Portugal, make it this one! - We’ve been living in Lisbon for a year and a half, and our day with Diogo was one of the absolute best days we’ve had in Portugal so far. I booked this tour as a birthday gift for my husband, who loves Sintra and wanted to learn more about its history. We hoped we would learn a lot, but what we didn’t expect was that we would have an incredible adventure and make a new Portuguese friend in the process! Diogo is an absolute gem. He’s so charismatic and has such a great sense of humor, and his depth of knowledge about Portugal, its history, and its ancient civilizations is absolutely incredible. I can’t imagine anyone who wouldn’t enjoy their day with Diogo; if you love history, you’ll be fascinated, and if you don’t, you’ll still have a total blast laughing and chatting with him all day! We came away with a whole new level of understanding about our new country, its history, and its culture, along with some incredibly special memories which are already among our favorites from our entire time in Portugal thus far. Personally, I think this tour is one of the hidden gems among all the tourism experiences Portugal had to offer—and if you’ve happened to find it, you’re well on your way to one of the most memorable travel days you’ll ever have!

The highlight of our trip - thank you, Diogo! - I made a reservation for this tour for me and my husband at the very last minute, while on the train from Porto to Lisbon for the last 2 days of a very-quickly-planned 6 night trip to Portugal. I was tired of making decisions and getting us to and from places, and figuring out times and lines, so I decided a day with a private guide was needed. What tremendous great fortune! A week later, at my computer across the ocean, I am still smiling about the wonderful day we spent with Diogo in the Sintra region. For me and my family, it is always the greatest privilege to meet a local person and spend several hours together exploring, site seeing and, most especially, getting to know what life is like in that country and town or village. On this short trip I had decided that we were not going to spend time inside any museums or castles. We wanted to be outside as much as possible, so the description of this particular tour really appealed to me. When we met at a cafe near the train station, Diogo immediately reviewed what we were hoping to do that day, and to get out of the tour, and offered to make adjustments based on what we shared with him. And off we went in his convertible, electric Citroen SUV! It was a gorgeous, sunny, slightly chilly day. Advice - bring a few layers at this time of the year! We met at 2 pm and were together until sundown, in the open vehicle, up and down the hills, high above the coastline, and at the beach. What a beautiful area this is, and we would never have seen most of it without being in a car, with a local person. Diogo is an archaeologist and an historian, and we learned a great deal as we hiked near, around, and viewed, the castles and the coast. It was extra special to learn about the archaeological dig that Diogo had participated in at the Castelo dos Mouros, and to see his own discovery. A few other lucky visitors to the castle were drawn in as he explained everything to us! During our time together we covered many subjects including the current day economy and politics of both of our countries, details about our families (our adult sons are just a little younger than Diogo), a shared interest in geocaching in the past, and advice to each other about what to do on our next visit to Portugal and Diogo's future trip to the States (a tour of DC awaits you, Diogo!) We shared a bite and a drink, and met more young locals, before parting- a little sadly, and as friends -at the train station. It was a perfect day. We cannot recommend Mr. Local enough! Muita obrigada, Diogo. Estamos com saudades.

Lovely historical sites tour - Diogo was absolutely wonderful! If you like history and want to learn about the Sintra area you have to book with Diogo. Being an actual local archaeologist he provides a wealth of knowledge and detail you can’t find elsewhere. Since his service is private (it’s just you and Diogo) you can ask all the questions you want and you may even get to go off the planned route if something of interest comes up in conversation. I cannot recommend Diogo enough!

Great experience - This tour was a great wrap up me and my huusband's 1st visit to Portugal. We really wanted to get more in depth regarding the history and culture of this beautiful country. Diogo was full of information, and tailored the tour to suit our interests. We had a fantastic day, and would repeat in future. Diogo is knowledgeable and was able to fully answer everything we asked whether is was directly relate to the tour or not. We highly recommend any tour led by this guide!
