Highlights
  • Aguas Calientes - Cusco/Ollantaytambo - Machu Picchu

After breakfast we’ll collect you from your hotel in Cusco or Ollantaytambo where you’ll take the train to Aguas Calientes (if you’re boarding from Ollantaytambo you’ll take the train direct and we’ll collect you from the station in Aguas Calientes). The ride takes you through a valley and into the Urubamba River canyon, then into the cloud forest as you near the Machu Picchu sanctuary. Stopping at Aguas Calientes you’ll take a 25-minute bus ride up to the Machu Picchu ruins. This 15th-century Inca citadel is located at 7,970 ft (2,430 m) and is a masterpiece of engineering that served as a sanctuary and retreat for the Incan Emperor Pachacutec and his royal court. Machu Picchu, is considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. Machu Picchu was abandoned 100 years after construction and remained largely hidden to the outside world until the early 20th century. If there’s time, hike up to Machu Picchu Mountain for a bird’s eye view of the citadel. After a 2-3 hour tour with your guide, take the bus back to Aguas Calientes to connect to your train to Ollantaytambo and your connecting transfer to Cusco.

Great tour - Unuraymi organised a great tour for me, including a customised visit to Lake Titikaka on top of the Sacred Valley/Machu Picchu tour. The guides were knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and took me through some interesting history and spectacular views. James himself was responsive, proactive and friendly, and planned around my onward travel schedule very well. The accommodation was also very comfortable. A couple of things I’d advise is that the trains at the end of the trek from Santa Teresa to Aguas Calientes seemed to be slightly unpredictable - we unfortunately ended up trekking in the dark as the last train was for locals only. The transfers and activities can also be quite early in the morning - useful for making the most of the day, but coffee perhaps needed! Overall, a great trip though.

Good tour - We stayed right by the train station so an employee met us to deliver our tickets. She was very kind and waited with us for the train. When we arrived in Aguas Caliente our guide ride the bus with us to Machu Picchu. He was very informative and allowed us to hike the ruins at our own pace. The lunch was ample and good as well. I would recommend this trip to anyone going to Machu Picchu.
