From Surf to Springs: Discovering Costa Rica’s Hidden Treasures
When the waves are calm, I venture inland to discover hidden gems like Sarchi. Join me as I explore the vibrant artisan town, marvel at the majestic Arenal Volcano, and unwind in the soothing Ecotermales Hot Springs.
A Day in Sarchi: The Unexpected Charm of an Artisan Town
As a seasoned traveler and surfer, I’ve roamed the coastlines of Central America, always on the lookout for the perfect wave. But every now and then, I find myself drawn inland, away from the ocean’s embrace, to explore the hidden gems that lie beyond the surf. This time, my journey took me to Sarchi, a quaint artisan town nestled in the heart of Costa Rica. I had heard whispers of its charm, but I was skeptical. After all, how could anything compare to the thrill of riding a wave? Yet, as I stepped off the tour bus, I was greeted by the vibrant colors and intricate designs of the world’s largest ox cart, a testament to the town’s rich history and craftsmanship.
Our guide, Donald, was a fountain of knowledge, weaving tales of the ox cart’s significance in Costa Rican culture as we wandered through the town. I found myself captivated by the local woodworkers, their hands deftly crafting beautiful pieces that seemed to capture the very essence of Sarchi. It was a brief stop, but one that left a lasting impression, and I couldn’t resist picking up a handcrafted souvenir to remember the experience.
A Glimpse of Majesty: The Arenal Volcano
The next leg of our journey took us to the Arenal Volcano, a majestic natural wonder that loomed large against the horizon. As someone who spends most of his time chasing waves, the sight of this towering behemoth was a stark reminder of nature’s raw power and beauty. We only had about 20 minutes at the overlook, but it was enough to soak in the awe-inspiring view and snap a few photos to share with my fellow adventurers back home.
While I wished we could have lingered a bit longer, I understood the need to keep the tour moving. After all, there was still so much to see and do, and the day was far from over. As we boarded the bus, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to witness such a magnificent sight, even if only for a short while.
Soothing Waters: The Ecotermales Hot Springs
Our final destination was the Ecotermales Hot Springs, a hidden oasis nestled in the lush rainforest of La Fortuna. As a surfer, I’m no stranger to the healing power of water, but the thermal pools offered a different kind of rejuvenation. The warm, mineral-rich waters enveloped me in a soothing embrace, washing away the fatigue of the day’s adventures.
I opted for the more private experience at Ecotermales, and it was a decision I didn’t regret. The tranquility of the setting, combined with the gentle murmur of the surrounding forest, created a sense of peace that was hard to find elsewhere. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the pools began to fill with fellow travelers, but the earlier solitude had already worked its magic.
Dinner at Ecotermales was a delightful affair, with a farm-to-table menu that showcased the best of Costa Rican cuisine. As I savored each bite, I reflected on the day’s journey, grateful for the chance to step away from the familiar rhythm of the waves and immerse myself in the wonders of the land.
As we made our way back to the coast, the long drive home gave me plenty of time to ponder the day’s experiences. It had been a day of discovery, of stepping outside my comfort zone and embracing the unexpected. And while the ocean will always call me back, I know that the memories of Sarchi, the Arenal Volcano, and the Ecotermales Hot Springs will linger long after the waves have faded.
