From Mishaps to Magic: A Day at Arenal Volcano
When a day starts with unexpected hiccups, it often leads to the most memorable adventures. Join me as I recount my journey to Arenal Volcano, where a series of mishaps turned into a day of unexpected delights and new friendships.
A Bumpy Start with a Silver Lining
As a seasoned traveler, I’ve learned that the best adventures often come from the most unexpected situations. My recent trip to Sarchi for the Arenal Volcano Tour was no exception. The day began with a few hiccups—wrong excursions, missing guests, and a delayed start. But, as any surfer knows, you ride the wave you’re given. Our guide, Ricardo, was the epitome of cool and calm, and soon enough, we were on our way, sharing stories and laughter that set the tone for the day.
The journey to Arenal was filled with sights that were as colorful as the stories we shared. We passed the famous Belgium metal church and the world’s largest ox cart, a testament to Costa Rica’s rich artisan history. The drive through the Cloud Forest was an experience in itself, with mist swirling around us, creating an atmosphere that was both eerie and enchanting. By the time we stopped for lunch, the clouds had parted, revealing the majestic Arenal Volcano in all its glory. As we enjoyed a local dish of rice and shrimp, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the unexpected turn of events that had led me here.
A Serendipitous Upgrade
Originally, I was set to relax at the Baldi Hot Springs, but due to the morning’s mix-ups, I found myself upgraded to the Tabacon Thermals and Spa Resort. It was a serendipitous twist that turned an already promising day into something extraordinary. The resort was a paradise of natural beauty, with thermal waters that soothed every muscle and a setting that felt like a hidden oasis.
For four blissful hours, I indulged in the spa’s offerings, from massages that melted away any lingering tension to thermal pools that rejuvenated my spirit. The lush surroundings were a reminder of why I love this nomadic lifestyle—each new place offers a unique slice of paradise, waiting to be discovered. As I soaked in the mineral-rich waters, I thought of the waves I chase and the beaches I call home, and how this experience was a different kind of adventure, yet equally fulfilling.
Dinner with New Friends
The day concluded with an A La Carte dinner at the Tabacon restaurant, where Ricardo and I were joined by a group of spirited older travelers. These ladies, all in their seventies, regaled us with tales of zip-lining and adventures that rivaled any I’ve had on the waves. Their stories were a testament to the fact that adventure knows no age, and their zest for life was infectious.
As we dined with the volcano as our backdrop, I reflected on the day’s events. What began as a series of mishaps had transformed into a day of unexpected delights and new friendships. The drive back to San Jose was a peaceful one, with the day’s memories playing like a highlight reel in my mind. This trip was a reminder that sometimes, the best experiences come from the waves you didn’t plan to ride. Thank you, Ricardo, for an unforgettable day.
