From Waves to Waterfalls: A Surfer’s Journey Through Costa Rica’s Natural Wonders
Trading surfboards for hiking boots, my wife and I embarked on a journey through Costa Rica’s lush landscapes. From the aromatic coffee plantations to the awe-inspiring Poás Volcano and the enchanting La Paz Gardens, this tour was a refreshing escape from the waves.
A Morning Brew and a Volcanic View
The day began with the sun peeking over the horizon, casting a warm glow on the lush landscapes of Costa Rica. My wife and I, always on the hunt for the next adventure, decided to take a break from the waves and explore the wonders of the San José Province. We hopped into a comfortable van at 8 am, ready for a day filled with discovery. Our first stop was a quaint coffee plantation in San Isidro. As a surfer, I often rely on a good cup of coffee to kickstart my day, so this was a treat. Although the coffee tasting wasn’t complimentary, the rich aroma and the sight of the coffee beans being processed was enough to satisfy my curiosity. The plantation offered a glimpse into the history and culture of Costa Rican coffee, a perfect start to our journey.
The Majestic Poás Volcano
Next, we made our way to the Poás Volcano, one of the seven active volcanoes in Costa Rica. The drive up was scenic, with views that could rival any surf spot I’ve visited. Once we arrived, the real adventure began. We hiked up to the crater lake, a journey that required a bit of stamina but was well worth the effort. The sight of the steaming crater was awe-inspiring, a reminder of the raw power of nature. On our way back, we stopped at a local shop to taste fresh strawberries, cheese, and wine. The smoked cheese was a delightful surprise, adding a savory twist to our day. This unexpected stop was a highlight, offering a taste of the local flavors that make Costa Rica so unique.
Enchanting La Paz Gardens
Our final destination was the La Paz Waterfall Gardens, a place that felt like stepping into a tropical paradise. The gardens were meticulously maintained, with vibrant flowers and lush greenery at every turn. As we wandered through the animal sanctuary, we encountered a variety of creatures, from colorful butterflies to playful frogs. While the sloths and monkeys were charming, it was the butterflies that truly captivated me. After a buffet lunch, which was a bit late in the day, we set off to explore the waterfalls. The five cascading falls were breathtaking, each offering a unique perspective of the surrounding landscape. The hike was a bit challenging, with over 500 steps, but the reward was a sense of accomplishment and a deeper connection to the natural beauty of Costa Rica. Our guides, Rachelle and Moham, were fantastic, sharing insights and stories that enriched our experience. They even surprised a young traveler with a birthday cake, adding a personal touch to an already memorable day. As we made our way back, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore such a diverse and vibrant part of the world. This tour was a reminder that sometimes, the best adventures are found off the beaten path, away from the waves and into the heart of nature.
