From Waves to Waterfalls: A Surfer’s Journey Through Costa Rica’s Natural Wonders
Trading my surfboard for a day of exploration, I embarked on the Poás Volcano and La Paz Gardens Tour in Costa Rica. This adventure promised natural wonders and cultural insights, and it delivered in spades. Join me as I recount a day filled with coffee, clouds, and cascading waterfalls.
A Coffee Lover’s Dream
As a surfer, I’m always on the lookout for the next wave, but this time, I decided to trade my board for a day of exploration in the lush landscapes of Costa Rica. The Poás Volcano and La Paz Gardens Tour promised a day filled with natural wonders and cultural insights, and it did not disappoint.
Our adventure began with a visit to a charming coffee estate in San Isidro. As we drove through the rolling hills of Alajuela, our guide shared fascinating tidbits about Costa Rican history and the vital role coffee plays in the local economy. The estate itself was a sight to behold, with coffee plants at various stages of growth stretching as far as the eye could see. I couldn’t resist sampling a cup of their finest brew, and it was every bit as rich and flavorful as the waves I chase.
Into the Clouds
Next, we ascended into the cloud forest, making our way to the Poás Volcano. The anticipation was palpable as we donned our red helmets and approached the observation area. Unfortunately, the clouds had other plans, obscuring the crater from view. But our guide’s engaging stories about the volcano’s active period in 2017 and the safety measures in place kept our spirits high. It was a reminder that nature, much like the ocean, is unpredictable and awe-inspiring.
A quick stop at a local cheese and fruit shop provided a delightful interlude before we continued our journey. The fresh produce was a treat, and it was a chance to chat with fellow travelers from around the world, sharing stories and laughter.
Waterfalls and Wildlife
The final leg of our tour took us to the La Paz Waterfall Gardens, a place that felt like stepping into a vibrant postcard. The aviary was alive with the colors and sounds of exotic birds, and the animal sanctuary offered a close encounter with jungle cats and other rescued wildlife. After a satisfying buffet lunch, we set off on a hike along the river and waterfall trail.
The waterfalls were nothing short of spectacular, each one offering a unique perspective and photo opportunity. The trails were well-maintained, and the walk was broken into manageable sections, making it accessible for everyone in our group. As we hiked, I couldn’t help but draw parallels between the cascading water and the waves I ride—both powerful, beautiful, and ever-changing.
Throughout the day, our guide was a constant source of knowledge and humor, ensuring we were informed and entertained. The group size was just right, allowing for a personal experience without feeling crowded. By the end of the tour, I felt a deep appreciation for the natural beauty and cultural richness of Costa Rica, a place that continues to captivate my adventurous spirit.
