• Vatican Museums - The Vatican Museums’ origins can be traced to a single marble sculpture acquired in the 16th century: Laocoön and His Sons. Discovered on January 14, 1506, in a vineyard near the Santa Maria Maggiore basilica in Rome, Pope Julius II sent Giuliano da Sangallo and Michelangelo, who worked for the Vatican, to examine the find. On their recommendation, the Pope purchased the sculpture from the vineyard owner. Exactly one month after its discovery, the Pope showcased the sculpture at the Vatican for public viewing. It illustrates the Trojan priest Laocoön and his sons, Antiphantes and Thymbraeus, being attacked by giant serpents. In 1854, Pius established the Lateran Museum by decree, incorporating some Vatican collections, while Benedict founded the Museum Christianum.

In October 2006, the permanent public opening of a Vatican Hill necropolis’ excavations was part of the museums’ 500th-anniversary celebrations.
