This tour explores the evolving landscape of Virginia, beginning with the indigenous Algonquin people who called this area Tsenecomoco long before the English settled in Jamestown. It includes “Voices from the Garden,” a unique tribute to the women who contributed to Virginia’s development, and a civil rights monument featuring Barbara Johns. Participants will trace the steps and stories of this historic square, with its winding paths shaded by native trees, a design completed in 1850. Inspired by the ideals of freedom envisioned by Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States, visitors can admire his white-columned creation and continue to explore, reflecting on the past’s echoes and their potential to guide the future in this ever-evolving landscape.
