Setting Sail for Adventure

The Caribbean has always been my playground, a place where the ocean’s rhythm matches the beat of my heart. So when I heard about the Damajagua Waterfalls Adventure, I knew it was time to trade my surfboard for hiking boots and dive into a different kind of water escapade. The promise of cascading waterfalls and natural pools was too tempting to resist.

Our journey began with a smooth ride from the Amber Cove cruise port, courtesy of our guide, Renee. Her brand-new mini-bus was a welcome sight, and her friendly demeanor set the tone for the day. As we drove through the lush landscapes of Puerto Plata, Renee shared snippets of local history, enriching our anticipation for the adventure ahead. With a cooler stocked with water, Coke, rum, and beer, we were well-prepared for the trek.

The Hike to Heaven

The hike to the waterfalls was a test of endurance, but one that promised a heavenly reward. The path was steep, with deep stairs that challenged even the most seasoned adventurers. As someone who thrives on the thrill of a good surf, I found the climb invigorating, a reminder of the power and beauty of nature.

The trail wound through a dense jungle canopy, offering occasional glimpses of the sun. It was a humid day, and the air was thick with the scent of earth and foliage. Mosquitoes buzzed around, a reminder to always pack repellent. Despite the challenges, the camaraderie among our small group kept spirits high. We shared stories and laughter, each step bringing us closer to the waterfalls.

A Refreshing Plunge

Reaching the waterfalls was like discovering a hidden paradise. The sound of rushing water was music to my ears, and the sight of the cascading falls was breathtaking. The water was a cool 16-17°C, a refreshing shock to the system that reminded me of my days surfing in the Pacific’s chilly embrace.

Sliding down the natural rock slides and jumping from the 15-foot platform into the pools below was pure exhilaration. Each plunge was a celebration of life, a moment of pure joy that washed away the fatigue of the hike. The water was crystal clear, and the surrounding jungle added to the sense of adventure.

After the thrill of the waterfalls, we gathered for a Dominican feast. The buffet was a delightful spread of local flavors, with fish, chicken, rice, beans, and a tangy salsa that danced on the palate. It was the perfect way to refuel after a day of exploration.
