Setting Sail to Holbox Island

The sun was just beginning to rise as I found myself at the Riu Playacar, ready to embark on a day trip to Holbox Island. The promise of turquoise waters, white sandy beaches, and a chance to explore the Yum Balam Nature Reserve was too tempting to resist. As a professional surfer, I’ve spent countless days chasing waves across Central America, but this trip was about something different—reconnecting with nature and indulging in the local culture.

We set off on a 1 hour and 40-minute drive to the port, with a quick stop for refreshments. With a couple of hours to explore, I wandered the streets, indulging in the famous Holbox black ice cream—a delicious blend of coconut, vanilla, and chocolate.

Our final stop was the Parque Ecoturistico, where a cold water hole offered a refreshing swim. Though the rain cut our exploration short, the experience was invigorating. The sight of minnows darting through the water was a gentle reminder of the delicate ecosystem that thrives here.

As we made our way back to the port, a crocodile lurking under the floorboards added a touch of adventure to the day. By the time we returned to the hotel, the sun was setting, casting a golden glow over the horizon.
