Into the Wild: The Avakas Gorge

The day began with the sun barely peeking over the horizon, casting a golden hue over the rugged landscape of Cyprus. Our guide, Debbie, a seasoned driver with a passion for adventure, picked us up in a sturdy Land Rover. As we set off towards the Avakas Gorge, the anticipation was palpable. The early start was a strategic move, allowing us to beat the crowds and the sweltering midday heat.

The Avakas Gorge is a natural wonder, with towering limestone walls that seem to touch the sky. The 45-minute trek through the gorge was a feast for the senses. Lunch at a taverna in Latchi was a delightful surprise. The meal, though not included in the tour, was a feast in itself. A simple sandwich turned out to be a triple-decker delight, accompanied by a generous portion of chips. It was a testament to the hospitality and value for money that Cyprus offers.

As we made our way back to Paphos, with a detour through a charming Cypriot village and a stop at the Sea Caves, I reflected on the day’s adventures. Debbie’s passion and expertise had made the experience unforgettable, and the camaraderie among our group of thrill-seekers added to the joy.
