The Mythical Beginnings at Aphrodite’s Rock

Our journey began in the coastal town of Paphos, a place steeped in myth and legend. As we set off on the old Paphos/Limassol road, the anticipation of visiting Aphrodite’s Rock, or Petra tou Romiou, was palpable. This iconic sea stack is said to be the birthplace of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty. Our guide, Eva, a historian with a wealth of knowledge, regaled us with tales of how Aphrodite emerged from the sea foam by these very rocks. The brief stop allowed us to capture the ethereal beauty of the site, with the azure waves crashing against the rugged coastline, a scene that seemed to transcend time itself.

Continuing our journey, we passed the Episkopi garrison, a reminder of Cyprus’s complex history with the British military presence. The road led us to Kourion, an ancient hillside settlement that offers a captivating glimpse into the island’s past. The Greco-Roman theatre, still in use today for summer concerts, stood as a testament to the enduring legacy of ancient architecture. As we wandered through the excavations, the panoramic views over the bay were nothing short of breathtaking, a perfect blend of history and natural beauty.

The Medieval Charm of Kolossi Castle

Our next destination was Kolossi Castle, a medieval fortress with a storied past. Built in the 12th century, it served as a stronghold for the Crusaders and was historically significant for the production of Commandaria, a sweet wine favored by Richard the Lionheart. Eva’s narration brought the history of the castle to life, painting vivid pictures of knights and battles. The castle itself, with its imposing stone walls and strategic location, was a fascinating site to explore.

After a refreshing drink at a nearby café, we continued our journey inland towards the village of Omodos. The drive was a poignant reminder of nature’s resilience, as we witnessed the charred remains of trees and vines from recent wildfires, juxtaposed with patches of vibrant green regrowth. Omodos, with its cobbled streets and traditional architecture, felt like a step back in time. The village holds a special place in my heart, and visiting George’s bakery was a delightful experience. Sampling local delicacies like nuts, bread, and olive oil, we were treated to the authentic flavors of Cyprus.

A Taste of Cyprus at Gerolemo Winery

The final leg of our journey took us to the Gerolemo winery, nestled in the heart of the Cypriot countryside. Although not a wine connoisseur myself, the tasting session was an eye-opening experience. Guided by one of the two brothers who run the winery, his passion for winemaking was infectious. We sampled a variety of wines, including the renowned Commandaria and the potent spirit Zivania. Each sip was a testament to the rich viticultural heritage of the region.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the landscape, we made our way back to Paphos. The day had been a remarkable introduction to the heart of Cyprus, a land where history and mythology intertwine seamlessly. Our driver, affectionately nicknamed “sexy Andreas” by Eva, navigated the winding roads with ease, bringing our adventure to a close. Eva’s stories and insights had enriched the experience, leaving us with a deeper appreciation for the island’s cultural tapestry. This journey through ancient Cyprus was not just a tour, but a voyage through time, one that I will cherish for years to come.
