From Waves to Beans: A Surfer’s Coffee Adventure in Panama
In search of a unique adventure, I traded my surfboard for a coffee bean in the lush highlands of Palmira, Panama. Join me as I dive into the world of coffee-making, from picking cherries to roasting beans, and discover the rich flavors of Geisha coffee.
Discovering the Heart of Coffee Country
As a professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours chasing waves along the sun-drenched coasts of Central America. But this time, my journey took me inland to the lush highlands of Palmira, Panama, where I traded my surfboard for a coffee bean. My wife and I, always on the lookout for unique experiences, stumbled upon the Coffee Experience nestled in the verdant hills of Boquete. The promise of a hands-on coffee-making adventure was too tempting to resist.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by the warm smiles of Enrique, our guide, and two playful dogs, Karma and Dante. Enrique’s passion for coffee was infectious, and his knowledge was as rich as the aroma of freshly roasted beans. He guided us through the entire process, from picking the ripe cherries to roasting our own batch of coffee. The experience was immersive, allowing us to feel the weight of the pilon and test the moisture content of the beans. It was a sensory journey that deepened my appreciation for the art of coffee-making.
The Art of Roasting
The highlight of the tour was undoubtedly the roasting process. Each group was given a small machine to roast their own coffee, and Enrique patiently explained the nuances of achieving the perfect roast. As the beans crackled and darkened, I couldn’t help but draw parallels to the way I analyze wave conditions—both require a keen eye and a deep understanding of the elements at play.
The hands-on nature of the experience was a refreshing change from the usual surf-centric adventures. It reminded me of the importance of slowing down and savoring the moment, much like waiting for the perfect wave. The culmination of our efforts was a sealed sample of our roasted coffee, a tangible reminder of our time in Palmira.
A Taste of Panama
No coffee experience would be complete without a tasting, and this tour did not disappoint. We sampled coffee brewed in three different ways, each method highlighting unique flavors and aromas. The pièce de résistance was the Geisha coffee, renowned for its delicate floral notes and smooth finish. It was a fitting end to a day filled with discovery and delight.
As we made our way back to downtown Boquete, courtesy of Andi’s generous offer for a ride, I reflected on the day’s adventures. The Coffee Experience was more than just a tour; it was a journey into the heart of Panama’s coffee culture. For a surfer like me, always in search of the next thrill, it was a reminder that sometimes the best experiences are found off the beaten path, in the quiet moments between the waves.
