From Waves to Beans: A Coffee Adventure in Boquete
Trading the surfboard for a coffee cup, I ventured to Boquete, Panama, to explore its renowned coffee culture. Join me as I dive into the art of coffee roasting and discover the vibrant flavors of this lush region.
A Coffee Adventure in Boquete
As a nomadic surfer, my travels have taken me to some of the most breathtaking beach towns in Central America. But this time, I decided to swap the surfboard for a coffee cup and head inland to the lush, green hills of Boquete, Panama. Known for its world-class coffee, Boquete promised a different kind of thrill, and I was eager to dive into the Coffee Experience and learn the art of coffee roasting.
Upon arrival, I was greeted by Enrique, a local guide whose passion for coffee was as palpable as the aroma wafting through the air. Enrique, a Boquete native, shared stories of the region’s rich coffee culture and the impact of expats who have embraced and supported the local community. As we strolled through the coffee farm, I was struck by the vibrant red cherries hanging from the trees, ready to be picked. It was November, the perfect time to witness the coffee harvest in full swing.
From Cherry to Cup
The hands-on experience began with picking the cherries, a task that required a keen eye and a gentle touch. Enrique explained the importance of selecting only the ripest cherries to ensure the best flavor. As we moved through the process, I learned to appreciate the meticulous care that goes into each step of coffee production.
Next, we processed the cherries, removing the pulp to reveal the beans inside. I was amazed at the precision required to check the moisture content of the beans, a crucial step in ensuring quality. Enrique’s expertise shone through as he guided us through the drying and milling processes, each step bringing us closer to the final product.
The highlight of the day was roasting my own batch of coffee. With Enrique’s guidance, I opted for a medium roast, a choice inspired by his own preference and the newfound knowledge that dark roasts, while bold, often lose some of the coffee’s beneficial antioxidants. The aroma of freshly roasted beans was intoxicating, and I couldn’t wait to taste the fruits of my labor.
A Taste of Panama
The final part of the experience was a coffee tasting session, where I had the chance to sample coffee brewed in various ways. From the Italian espresso to the French press, each method offered a unique flavor profile. I was particularly intrigued by the siphon-based brewing, a method I had heard of but never seen in action. The delicate balance of flavors was a revelation, and I found myself savoring each sip.
As I sat back, sipping on a cup of Geisha coffee, I reflected on the day’s adventure. The experience had not only deepened my appreciation for coffee but also connected me to the vibrant culture of Boquete. It was a reminder that, much like surfing, the journey is as rewarding as the destination.
Boquete’s coffee experience was a delightful detour from my usual surf-centric travels, and I left with a newfound respect for the art of coffee making. If you find yourself in Panama, I highly recommend taking a break from the waves to explore the rich flavors and traditions of Boquete’s coffee culture. La Paz, La Paix, Peace.
