- Shitennoji - Shitennoji (四天王寺, Shitennōji) is among Japan’s oldest temples and the first state-built temple, founded in 593 by Prince Shotoku, a proponent of Buddhism in Japan. Despite multiple reconstructions over the centuries, the temple maintains its original 6th-century design.
The outer temple grounds are free to enter, while the inner precinct, Gokuraku-jodo Garden, and treasure house require an admission fee. Within the inner precinct’s pebble-covered courtyard stands a five-storied pagoda and the Main Hall (Kondo), where Prince Shotoku is enshrined as a Kannon statue.
- Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine - Osaka’s Sumiyoshi Taisha (住吉大社, “Sumiyoshi Grand Shrine”) is one of Japan’s oldest shrines, established in the 3rd century before Buddhism’s introduction. It showcases the unique Sumiyoshi-zukuri architectural style, uninfluenced by the Asian mainland. Only two other styles, Shinmei-zukuri at the Ise Shrines and Taisha-zukuri at Izumo Taisha, are considered purely Japanese.
- Umeda Sky Building - The Umeda Sky Building (梅田スカイビル) is a remarkable skyscraper in Osaka’s Kita district, near Osaka and Umeda Stations, also known as “New Umeda City.”
Standing 173 meters tall, the building comprises two towers connected by the “Floating Garden Observatory” on the 39th floor, offering stunning city views. The basement features a restaurant floor replicating an early Showa Period town, while offices occupy most other floors.
- Kuromon Market - Kuromon Market (黒門市場, Kuromon Ichiba) is a covered public market extending 600 meters parallel to Sakaisujidori Street in Osaka’s Minami area. With around 150 shops, it primarily sells fish, meat, and produce, alongside traditional sweets and affordable clothing and homeware. Dating back to the Edo Period, the market is a vibrant spot for shopping and sampling diverse street foods.
- Shinsekai - Shinsekai (新世界, lit. “New World”) is an Osaka district developed pre-war and later neglected. At its center stands Tsutenkaku Tower, a nostalgic symbol of Shinsekai.
The district’s current layout emerged after the 1903 National Industrial Exposition, which attracted over five million visitors in five months. Following the expo, efforts began to enhance and modernize Shinsekai.

The Doguyasuji Festival on October 9 (Tool Day) features tool sales and the Garapon Lottery.
