- Khari Baoli - Khari Baoli street is perhaps the most vibrant and intriguing part of Old Delhi. Known for its strong aromas, it is home to one of the largest wholesale spice markets globally. The vibrant and delightful spices that enhance Indian cuisine are showcased in large heaps and traded in enormous sacks. Strolling through the market is an experience in itself, though finding a spot to view its full splendor can be challenging.
- Fatehpuri - The Fatehpuri Mosque, a 17th-century mosque, is situated at the western end of Chandni Chowk’s oldest street. Constructed with red sandstone on a grand scale, it features a single dome. This mosque is a stunning example of Mughal architectural grandeur and has silently witnessed historical events from the Mughal and British eras to the present day. Flanked by towering minarets, the mosque’s traditional design includes a prayer hall with seven-arched openings, with the central arch being the tallest. The mosque also has single and double-storied apartments on its sides.
- Red Fort - The Red Fort Complex was constructed as the palace fort of Shahjahanabad, the new capital of India’s fifth Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan. Named for its massive red sandstone enclosing walls, it is adjacent to an older fort, Salimgarh, built by Islam Shah Suri in 1546, together forming the Red Fort Complex.
- Chandni Chowk Market - Located in the heart of Old Delhi, Chandni Chowk is a bustling shopping area with markets filled with spices, dried fruits, silver jewelry, and colorful saris. The narrow side streets are packed with small shops selling essential oils, stationery, and traditional Indian sweets. Nearby, the expansive Mughal-era Red Fort now houses a museum complex, and the 17th-century Jama Masjid is a vast red-sandstone mosque with towering minarets.
- Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib - On 11 November 1675, the ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur, was beheaded here by order of Aurangzeb. Before his body could be quartered and displayed, it was secretly taken by his disciple, Lakhi Shah Vanjara, who then burned his house to cremate the Guru’s body. This site is marked by another gurdwara, Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib. The severed head (“Sis” in Hindi or Punjabi) of Guru Tegh Bahadur was brought to Anandpur Sahib by Bhai Jaita, another disciple. Before cremation, it was taken to Ambala city for a night, where another gurdwara, Shri Sis Ganj Gurdwara, is located near the local vegetable market. Gobind Rai, who later became Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth and last Guru of the Sikhs, was also involved.
