• Humayun’s Tomb - Commissioned by Empress Bega Begum, Humayun’s first wife, the tomb’s construction began in 1565 and concluded in 1572, costing 1.5 million rupees, fully funded by the Empress. Deeply mourning her husband’s death, Bega Begum dedicated her life to building a grand mausoleum near the Yamuna River in Delhi. According to the 16th-century document Ain-i-Akbari, she oversaw the tomb’s construction after returning from Mecca and completing the Hajj pilgrimage.
• Qutub Minar - Initiated around 1192 by Qutab-ud-din Aibak, the first ruler of the Delhi Sultanate, Qutub Minar was built alongside the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque. The minaret, named after Qutab-ud-din Aibak or Sufi saint Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kaki, was constructed over the ruins of Lal Kot, the citadel of Dhillika. Aibak’s successor, Iltutmish, added three more storeys. The topmost storey was damaged by lightning in 1369 and rebuilt by Firuz Shah Tughlaq, who added another storey. An earthquake in 1505 caused further damage, which was repaired by Sikander Lodi. A major earthquake on 1 September 1803 caused significant damage, and Major Robert Smith of the British Indian Army renovated the tower in 1828, adding a pillared cupola over the fifth storey, creating a sixth. The cupola was removed in 1848 by order of Viscount Hardinge, then Governor General of India.
• Friday Mosque (Jama Masjid) - The Masjid e Jahan Numa, commonly known as the Jama Masjid of Delhi, is one of India’s largest mosques. Built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan between 1650 and 1656 at a cost of one million rupees, it was inaugurated by Imam Syed Abdul Ghafoor Shah Bukhari from Bukhara, now in Uzbekistan. There is no entrance fee, but a 300 rupee photography charge applies to foreigners.
