Conquering Kilimanjaro: A Solo Adventure on the Lemosho Route
Drawn by the allure of Africa’s highest peak, I embarked on a thrilling 7-day trek via the Lemosho Route. With the Altezza team’s exceptional care and guidance, this adventure was not just about reaching the summit but embracing the journey itself.
Arrival in Moshi: A Warm Welcome
As I stepped off the plane at Kilimanjaro International Airport, a wave of excitement washed over me. This was not my first time in Africa, but it was my first attempt at conquering its highest peak. The Altezza team was there to greet me, and from that moment, I felt like I was in capable hands. As a solo female traveler, safety is always a concern, but I never felt anything but secure and well-cared-for throughout the entire journey.
The pre-climb briefing at the cozy hotel nestled in the foothills of Kilimanjaro was thorough and reassuring. My travel manager meticulously reviewed my gear, offering insightful suggestions and even providing additional equipment from top-notch brands like Black Diamond. Their flexibility and attention to detail set the tone for the adventure that lay ahead.
The Climb: A Journey Through Diverse Landscapes
The Lemosho Route is renowned for its stunning vistas and diverse climatic zones, and it did not disappoint. From the lush rainforests at the base to the arctic desert near the summit, each day brought new challenges and breathtaking views. Our guides, Rashid and Augustine, were nothing short of extraordinary. Rashid’s timely boost of oxygen on a particularly cold summit night was a lifesaver, and Augustine’s steady hand during the descent was a comforting presence.
The trek was not just about reaching the summit; it was about the journey itself. The camaraderie among the group, the shared meals, and the countless tea breaks in the tiny kitchen tent created a sense of community. Our chefs worked magic, serving three-course meals and even surprising us with non-alcoholic champagne to celebrate our summit success. The dedication and hard work of the entire 45-person crew were evident in every aspect of the climb.
The Summit and Beyond: A Royal Descent
Reaching Uhuru Peak was a moment of triumph, but the descent held its own surprises. As we made our way down, our waiter Paulo awaited us with a lavish spread of drinks and a hot lunch, making us feel like royalty. The celebration continued with the presentation of certificates and medals, a testament to our achievement.
Even as I fell ill on the last day, the Altezza team was there, taking me to a doctor and ensuring I was comfortable and cared for. Their commitment to safety and service was unwavering, and it left a lasting impression.
This adventure was more than just a climb; it was a life-changing experience that reinforced my love for Africa and its incredible landscapes. The Kilimanjaro climb via the Lemosho Route is a journey I will cherish forever, and I encourage anyone seeking a thrilling and sustainable adventure to embark on this unforgettable trek.
