Ascending Kilimanjaro: A Journey Through the Heart of Africa’s Majestic Peak
The call of Kilimanjaro’s Rongai Route was irresistible, and with Altezza Travel’s renowned team, I embarked on a 7-day adventure that changed me forever. From the lush forests to the Arctic desert, every step was guided by true heroes, making the journey as memorable as the summit itself.
The Call of Kilimanjaro
As a wildlife photographer and an ardent lover of Africa, the call of Kilimanjaro had been echoing in my heart for years. The majestic Rongai Route, known for its scenic vistas and less crowded paths, seemed like the perfect choice for my adventure. I had heard whispers of the incredible team at Altezza Travel, and their reputation for excellence was the final nudge I needed to embark on this journey.
Arriving in Moshi, I was greeted by the warm smiles of the Altezza team, who instantly made me feel at home. The pre-climb briefing was thorough, and the excitement in the air was palpable. Our group of ten trekkers was supported by a dream team of 50 guides, porters, cooks, and camp staff, all dedicated to ensuring our safety and comfort. It was humbling to witness such dedication and effort, and I knew I was in good hands.
The Ascent Begins
The trek began at the Nalemuru Gate, where the lush coniferous forest welcomed us with open arms. Our lead guides, Abraham, Nolasco, Exaud, and Mark, were phenomenal. Their years of mountain experience, combined with humor and wisdom, made every step of the journey a joy. They were true heroes, always knowing exactly what to say or do to keep us moving forward, one step at a time.
The camaraderie among the group was infectious, and the evening camp songs were pure magic. Special mention must be made of the assistant guides, Joeseph, Peter, Suleman, and Musa, who effortlessly made our summit journey seamless. Their helping hands and encouraging words were invaluable, and they quickly became legends in our eyes.
Reaching the Summit
As we ascended through the various climatic zones, from the heath on Shira Plateau to the Arctic desert near the summit, the landscape changed dramatically. Each zone was unique and captivating, offering new challenges and breathtaking views. The camp managers, Mauturo and William, ensured that each camp felt like a home away from home, with clean facilities and warm water for washing.
The culinary skills of chefs Justin and Benson were nothing short of miraculous. Even at altitude, they prepared nourishing hot meals that fueled our bodies for the climb ahead. Each morning, we were greeted by the warm smiles of Reggie and Emmanuel, the best camp waiters one could hope for. Their friendly demeanor and warm drinks were the perfect start to each day.
Reaching the summit of Uhuru Peak was a moment of triumph, but the real gift was the journey itself and the incredible people who made it possible. The team at Altezza Travel are elite-level operators with true heart, and their reputation as the best on the mountain is well-deserved. This trip changed me, and I will forever cherish the memories and friendships forged on the slopes of Kilimanjaro.
If you’re considering hiking Kilimanjaro, I wholeheartedly recommend doing it with Altezza Travel. Their professionalism, warmth, and dedication to sustainable travel make them the perfect choice for this adventure of a lifetime. Asante sana, team. Hakuna matata always.
