Conquering Kilimanjaro: A Photographer’s Ascent to Africa’s Rooftop
Trading my camera for hiking boots, I embarked on a thrilling 8-day trek up Mount Kilimanjaro with Habari Adventures. Join me as I recount the camaraderie, breathtaking landscapes, and the unforgettable journey to the summit.
The Call of Kilimanjaro
As a wildlife photographer and travel writer, my heart has always been tethered to the wild landscapes of Africa. Each year, I find myself drawn back to this continent, documenting its endangered species and working alongside conservation groups. This time, however, my journey took a different turn. I decided to trade my camera for hiking boots and embark on an adventure that had long been on my bucket list: climbing Mount Kilimanjaro via the Lemosho Route with Habari Adventures.
Arriving in Moshi, I was greeted by the warm smiles of the Habari Adventures team. The excitement was palpable as we gathered for a briefing on the trek ahead. Our guide, Joseph, exuded a calm confidence that immediately put me at ease. He, along with Benson, would be our guiding lights on this journey to the roof of Africa. As we set off from the Lemosho Glades, the lush forest enveloped us, and the symphony of nature played in the background. It was a reminder of why I fell in love with Africa in the first place.
The Journey Upward
The trek was a test of endurance, but the camaraderie among our group made each step lighter. Our porters, Paul, Robert, Elias, Benard, Antony, and Deo, were the unsung heroes of our expedition. Their laughter and encouragement were infectious, and their dedication was unmatched. Every evening, as we arrived at camp, everything was meticulously set up, allowing us to relax and soak in the breathtaking views.
One of the highlights of the trek was the culinary experience provided by our chef, Peter, and his assistant, Raphael. Each meal was a delightful surprise, with fresh ingredients and flavors that warmed us from the inside out. Raphael’s morning ritual of waking us with a steaming cup of tea was a gesture that never failed to bring a smile to my face. It was these small acts of kindness that made the journey all the more memorable.
Reaching the Summit
The final ascent to Uhuru Peak was both exhilarating and humbling. As we climbed higher, the air thinned, and the temperature dropped, but Joseph and Benson were there every step of the way, offering words of encouragement and ensuring our safety. The moment we reached the summit, a wave of emotion washed over me. Standing at 5,895 meters, I felt a profound connection to the earth and a renewed commitment to preserving its wonders.
Descending the mountain, I reflected on the journey and the incredible team that made it possible. Habari Adventures had delivered an experience that was not only thrilling but deeply meaningful. Their commitment to responsible tourism and the well-being of their crew was evident in every aspect of the trek. For anyone considering this adventure, I wholeheartedly recommend embarking on this journey with Habari Adventures. It is an experience that will stay with you long after you’ve returned to the comforts of home.
