Arrival and First Impressions
As a wildlife photographer with a penchant for adventure, I was drawn to the Mogadishu City Tour, eager to explore Somalia’s vibrant capital. Upon arrival, I was greeted by Omar and his team, who ensured a seamless transition through immigration. The journey to our hotel was an experience in itself, as we traveled in a 4x4 with a full security detail. The hotel was a pleasant surprise, offering spacious rooms with stunning views, both from the room and the rooftop.
That evening, we ventured out to get a taste of Mogadishu. The city, with its rich history and cultural tapestry, was both intriguing and humbling. The anticipation for the next day’s full city tour was palpable, as I prepared to delve deeper into the heart of Mogadishu.
Exploring Mogadishu’s Highlights
The following day, we embarked on a comprehensive city tour in an armored 4x4, a necessary precaution given the day’s security concerns. Despite the underlying tension, the tour was nothing short of exhilarating. We visited the iconic Mogadishu Lighthouse, a beacon of history and resilience, and the bustling Barkera Market. Although our time at the market was brief due to safety concerns, the experience was unforgettable.
One of the highlights was swimming at Lido Beach, where the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean provided a refreshing escape. The day was capped off with a delectable seafood meal at a beachside restaurant, a perfect blend of local flavors and stunning views.

The next morning, Omar’s team efficiently guided us through the airport logistics, ensuring a smooth departure. While the request for additional funds for the armored vehicle was unexpected, it was a small price to pay for the sense of security provided by Omar and his team.
