Machame Camp (2,835 meters) to Shira Camp (3,750 meters)
Shira Camp - The second day features a steeper climb through the moorland zone. Experience a significant elevation gain as the landscape transforms. The day concludes at Shira Camp, situated on the Shira Plateau.
Shira Camp (3,750 meters) to Barranco Camp (3,900 meters)
Barranco Camp - Trek across the high desert plateau, passing the Lava Tower (4,600 meters) along the way. Descend to Barranco Camp, nestled in a picturesque valley beneath the Barranco Wall.
Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp
Barafu Camp - On the fourth day of the 6-Day Machame Route Hike, after breakfast, depart Barranco and ascend the steep ridge of the Barranco Wall (elev 4250m/13,900ft), through the Karanga Valley (elev 4050m/13,250ft) to the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail. Continue to Barafu Camp, completing the South Circuit, which provides views of the summit from various angles. Camp here with distant summit views.
Barafu Hut Campsite / Uhuru Peak / Mweka Campsite
Uhuru Peak - Rise at midnight for a light breakfast and prepare for the summit ascent. Aim to reach Uhuru Peak shortly before or after sunrise. The trail consists of switchbacks up steep scree or snow, reaching Stella Point on the crater rim at 5,861 m/18,640 ft between 4 and 5 AM. Enjoy views of the legendary crater and glaciers. A one-hour hike along the Kibo crater rim near the famous snows leads to Kilimanjaro’s true summit, Uhuru Peak. Spend some time taking photos, depending on how you feel. After summit activities, descend back to Barafu campsite for lunch, rest, gather equipment, and continue down through moorland and heath zone to Mweka campsite for dinner and overnight stay.
Mweka Camp (3,100 meters) to Mweka Gate (1,640 meters)
Mweka Gate - After breakfast, trek down to Mweka Gate. The pleasant trek passes through the lower rainforest slopes to Mweka Gate (1,640 meters). Covering 9km / 5.5 miles, the trek takes 3-4 hours. Upon successfully reaching Stella Point or Uhuru Peak, receive official certificates – a green certificate for Stella Point and a gold certificate for Uhuru Peak. It is customary to tip the trekking crew before returning to the hotel in Moshi.
